Straker to swim with the Dolphins in 2009
Hot on the heels of assistant Coach Paul Simmons leaving Stirling Lions, now state keeper Phil Straker has left Macedonia Park to join fellow Premier League side Mandurah City.
It was a huge decision for the 24-year-old but travelling from his home in Secret Harbour made it difficult and the move to Stuart Currie’s side is closer to home. “It was defiantly one of the biggest and hardest decisions of my football career so far to make the move away from Macedonia Park.
“With getting married and plans to start a family, and with all the travelling that I was doing up to Stirling from Secret Harbour, playing football close to home was always going to be high on the list and when the opportunity came up I found it hard to turn down,” explained Straker.
He leaves with some great memories. “Everyone at Stirling have been really good to me over the last 3 years especially Don Evans, Mick Lyons and Paul Simmons which made the decision all that harder to make. I have nothing but high praise for the coaching staff, players, fans and everyone else who is involved down at Macedonia Park and I have left with some special memories of my time spent there and wish them all the best in the coming season,” said Straker.
The 2007 & 2008 football West goalkeeper of the year had many highlights in his stay but two sprung to mind. “The close fought battle in the 2006 cup final win against Swan IC was fantastic, grabbing the equaliser with seconds to go in extra time and winning the penalty shootout.
“Also the 2007 cup final, when we beat Cockburn on penalties again with Darko stepping up and putting the winning penalty in the top right hand corner. This was another close fought game in hot conditions against a very strong and experienced Cockburn team which made it all the sweeter to come out on top,” commented Straker.
Lions President Don Evans wished Straker all the best in the move. “Phil has been travelling from Secret Harbour for three years now and with his recent marriage, his partner wants to see more of him....lucky Phil, unlucky Lions.
He leaves our club as a Cup final hero and will always be remembered as a top class keeper at the Den, rates with Rob Zabica, Gary Whyatt, Johhny Alavakis, Steve Angelides as one of the club keeper greats,” said Evans.
So there is a new chapter in the football career of Straker and one he’s looking forward too. “I’m looking forward to the new challenge with Mandurah and meeting up with the team for pre-season training, although it will be a bit strange at first not being around familiar faces I have come used to over the past three years.
“Mandurah were very solid last season and I think this gave teams a surprise how well they performed and if I can help keep that run of form going for the team next season then that would be a dream come true,” said Straker.

24.10.08 - Straker goes back-to-back
Stirling Lions’ custodian Phil Straker went back-to-back as ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ beating off strong competition from Inglewood United’s Oliver Taseski and Sorrento’s State keeper Neil Young to win the top honour.
A delighted Straker was humble regarding this season’s award. “To win last season was amazing and to be voted the best in the league was the best award in my football career.
“This season there has been some outstanding keepers in the league and for me it’s been a pleasure to be amongst all of them. When my name was read out tonight I was speechless, but saying that I’m wrapped to win the award and it gives you the incentive to go training each week and put in the hard yards,” said Straker.
The Lions have been without the services of experienced defenders Kevin Henderson and Darko Ilomanoski this season but Straker has lead by example with a young defence in front of him. “I had to guide the young lads on occasions but to be fare to central defenders Michael Pugliese and Dean Evans, they have been outstanding this season and I couldn’t have come anywhere near this trophy without them. They have been the backbone of our defence and I’ve relied on them many times this season,” explained Straker.

Geordie leaves the Lions Den
Paul ‘Geordie’ Simmons has decided to leave the Lions to pursue a senior Coaching role at first division side Dianella White Eagles for next season. Another to leave is striker Phil Arnold, who has joined Perth SC for 2009.
Lions President Don Evans wished both all the best. “The board and management of the Stirling Lions would like to officially give their well wishes to two great servants of the club in the last three years.
“Assistant coach, and all round great character of football at the club is hoping to help the Eagles gain promotion next year. He has assisted first team Coach Michael Lyons in two Cup titles and has made many friends at the Den who will respect his contributions at the club,” said Evans.
Striker Phil Arnold is looking at taking the responsibility of taking over the role left vacant by the injured Perth striker Andreas Oliviera. “Phil has left the Lions fans with great memories helping snatch the Cup from Swan's hands in 2006 and scoring and setting up some brilliant goals whilst at Macedonia Park. Both will be missed, but we wish them well and hope the new roles will help further their individual careers,” added Evans
Geordie enjoyed his stay at the club and wished them all the best. “I would like to thank Don Evans for his kind words and wishes and also for the time I was at The Den.
“I made some good friends in the community and people like Don are needed in every club. I sincerely hope his dreams come true and all the hard work by all at Macedonia Park pays off. I will still keep in contact and again wish you all the very very best, except when you meet the Mighty White Eagles in the cup,” said Simmons |
Lions’ youngster excited about home debut - (Thanks to www.footballwa.net)
Perth Glory Youth are eager to show local fans the form that’s taken them to the top of the table when they make their long awaited home debut. After two wins on the road, Glory makes their first appearance at Members Equity Stadium tomorrow where they face off with a Sydney F.C. side that is also unbeaten. “It will be great to be out there and have the home fans behind us,” said Ludovic Boi, whose opening round strike at Central Coast Mariners earned him the honour of scoring the fist ever goal for Glory Youth. “There haven’t been many cheers when we’ve scored away from home so hopefully we can get some goals and the supporters can enjoy the game.”
Boi, who was born in Mauritius but now calls Western Australia home, has been impressed with the level of competition the Youth League has produced in its infancy. “They’re all good players and it has been a fantastic experience so far,” said the 19-year old. “Not only are you playing against the best young players in the country you are also challenging yourself against guys with experience from the A-League and that definitely has helped in our development. We’ve got a really great bunch of boys, very strong, they’re all good players. The team bonding has been really terrific and we all got on very well from the very first training session.”

04.10.08 - Lions’ cup final heartbreak
The Stirling Lions under 18’s were beaten 5-3 by Forrestfield United in a penalty shoot out in yesterday’s Soccer Pools Cup final at Dorrien Gardens after the game ended 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.
The Lions, who were without a number of players who had pre-arranged holidays, had only 12 players still available, and they kicked off playing against a howling wind. Forrestfield began strongly, and Kynon Melling fired over from long range on 10 minutes and 12 minutes later Jarryd Campbell, who had replaced Alex Hall after only 18 minutes, also fired over from long range.
The Lions backline was working overtime with John Omeedzadeh and Adrian Diloritto both outstanding but they went close themselves on 33 minutes. Ndumba Makeche was brought down 25 yards out and Cameron Sutton’s quick free kick almost caught Forrestfield napping but keeper Joel Zappacosta was alert to save at his far post at the second attempt.
Both sides had further chances in the first half which was dominated by United, John Hunter’s header was saved low by Matt Hill and Andrew Harold fired over from 10-yards. For the Lions Thomas Kennedy’s shot straight at Zappacosta on 39 minutes, but it was 0-0 at the break and the Lions had the use of the strong wind in the second period.
It was Forrestfield who should have taken the lead on 51 minutes, the dangerous Melling crossed from the left and Lions keeper Hill misjudged the cross and it fell kindly to James Burns who blazed over with the goal at his mercy.
The Lions had a penalty claim turned down by referee David Scragg in the 58 th minute when Chris Zito was brought down, but two minutes later Makeche was brought down by Harold and this time Scragg pointed to the spot. Sutton took the spot kick which was saved low to his right by Zappacosta.
Zito almost made up for the penalty miss on the hour when he cut inside the penalty area on the left, but his stinging low shot was well saved by Zappacosta
Rhys Loxly was causing the Lions problems down the left and his cross from the bye-line on 65 minutes found Campbell whose header was well saved by Hill.
With the clock ticking down the deadlock was finally broken in the 86 th minute. The Lions defender Remo Venditti was down injured with cramp and Forrestfield capitalized, Loxley found Melling 25-yards from goal and the young midfielder’s shot flew into the top corner of the net giving Hill no chance.
It was a bitter blow for Joe Pugliese’s side but they showed great character and deep into stoppage-time they levelled. A free kick on the right by Kennedy found Omeedzadeh, who had been outstanding all afternoon, and he headed home at the back post. There wasn’t even time for the kick off and it was into penalties.
Unfortunately for the Lions Kennedy missed the opening penalty, and with Forrestfield scoring all theirs it was the First division side who won the cup 5-3 in the shoot out.
Lions Coach Joe Pugliese was proud of the players after the game but disappointed with the result. “We’ve had a great season and the lads showed the sort of character we’ve had all season to score the leveller late. We had three of our regular defenders missing today, and I changed the side around and they still performed well, I’m proud of them,” said Pugliese.

03.10.08 - Young Lions go for Cup Glory
The Lions under 18’s go for cup glory tomorrow when they take on Forrestfield United in the 2008 Soccer Pools Cup Final at Dorrien Gardens (kick-off 12.45pm). Having already captured the Premier League Youth title, Stirling will go into the game as favourites to lift the trophy and complete a memorable double. However, first they'll have to get past a focused Forrestfield side which has already claimed a couple of top flight scalps and were pipped to the First Division Youth championship by Canning City.
The Lions passage to the season finale began with a comfortable 5-1 win against Gosnells City. They beat E.C.U. Joondalup 3-1 in the second round then edged out Floreat Athena 2-1 in a tight quarter-final encounter. A pulsating quarter final show down with Perth S.C. was taken to penalties where the Lions eventually triumphed 4-2. Goalkeeper Matt Hill commands the league's meanest defence with support from centre-back Ben Senior. Thomas Kennedy and Cameron Sutton hold the key in the middle of the park and should Ndumba Makeche get even the faintest whiff of goal Forrestfield will pay dearly.
Lions Coach Doug Hesketh is still overseas and assistant Coach Joe Pugliese will take control of the side tomorrow but he said he will be there in spirit. “I’ve had this trip to Europe planned for a while and it’s unfortunate I’ve missed the two biggest games of the season. I’ve left the side in the very capable hands of Joe and I’m sure they will give it their best tomorrow,” said Hesketh.
Hesketh believes it will be a good contest in the final and Forrestfield are a good side. “We played them in a pre-season friendly at their place and draw 2-2. They are a very tough side physically but are very well organised, and we are defiantly expecting a very tough game.
“We’ve worked really hard this season and the team have been fantastic going unbeaten in the league and conceding only nine goals. Joe and I told the players in the first game of the season that that was the most important game of the season and continued to tell them every game and tomorrow will be no exception. We’ve had a plan for the whole season and the boys have executed it to perfection,” added Hesketh.
Anthony Cunningham's 24 regular season goals for Forrestfield make him a player to watch in the final third along with similarly attack-minded Andrew Harold. While first team players Kynon Melling and Rhys Loxley, who represented the State at Schoolboys level this year, are eligible to play in the game will have a significant great bearing on the sides chances of achieving Cup glory. Granted a first round bye, Forrestfield spanked Queens Park 12-3 and toppled Premier League side Cockburn City 6-1 to qualify for the last four. Their giant-killing run was extended by Mitchell Crocker, Warrick Bates and Cunningham who contributed to the 3-1 defeat of Fremantle Spirit.
Lions President Don Evans hopes the Lions cubs can make it third time lucky after missing out in the past two seasons, 0-4 to Armadale in 2006 and 2-4 to the Knights last season. “The lads have performed admirably all season and tomorrow will give them the opportunity to take out the league and cup double. I believe Forrestfield will drop players down to their side which is in the rules as they are under 18 but the Lions only promote players forward, not backward.
“The boys who have got the club to the final will have the chance to enjoy Cup final action and win it on their own merits. Players who could have qualified if we played reverse development are Dean Evans, Chris Rutherford, Keith Clevenger, Matty Italiano, Jake Geddes, Chris Harlond, Rory Feely to name a few.
“Forrestfield will be a force to be reckoned with, but it is our 3rd go at it after losing to Armadale and then the Knights in 2007, so no one should begrudge a Lions victory, except Forrestfield of course,” added Evans.

27.09.08 - Glorious Start To Glory Youth by Don Evans
The Perth Glory Youth team kicked off their Hyundai A League campaign with a disciplined and impressive 1-0 victory over the Central Coast Mariners at Blue Tongue Stadium in Gosford NSW last night. Former Glory captain and now youth coach Gareth Naven had his charges well prepared for the balmy conditions and his players came out looking sharp and in an attacking mood.
Central Coast Mariners pressed in the opening passages but their high balls were easy work for defenders Dean Evans (left) and Brent Griffiths who won everything in the air and this helped settle the Glory running players who had plenty of possession in the middle of the park.
The first shot on goal came from the Glory when Andrea Jukic used his strength and guile to win the ball in the middle and lay it on for Nick Rizzo to shoot wildly over the bar from long range.
Hayden Doyle started well in the right full back slot and combined well with Adam Luca who played some exquisite first time balls for Glory’s runners Ludovic Boi (right) and Ryan Pearson. A free kick to the Glory outside the box was given when Anthony Skorich was fouled but Luca's effort went just wide after 12 minutes. The Glory were on the hunt and Skorich was released by a great ball by Jukic but again his shot went well over the bar from outside the box.
A rare Jukic error in Central Coasts attacking half set them to shoot on goal with striker Brady Smith blazing wide in the 20th minute. End to end football saw Glory's Doyle combine well with Rizzo and his shot on goal was well saved by the Mariners keeper Andrew Redmayne. Minutes later it was the Central Coast who came close when Paul O'Grady shot from a tight angle was deflected wide by a desperate Scott Neville for a corner to the Mariners.
The play switched back to the Mariners half after Rizzo and Luca played a smart short corner with Rizzo's cross finding Skorich free to head on goal but he guided it straight into the body of Redmayne and in the ensuing scrap for the loose ball Mariners captain Nathan Sherlock booted away to safety. It was a chance that went begging for the Glory.
The Glory relaxed and Central Coast went on the counter with Darko Vidovic shooting on goal from the edge of the box only to find Glory keeper Tando Velaphi in no mood to concede as he parried the first shot away and then had to do it again as the Mariners striker followed up and blasted again only for Velaphi to complete a remarkable double save. The drama was not over as Central Coast's Brady Smith made a desperate and dangerous lunge at the ball with Glory defender Dean Evans committing his body to block but was fouled in the process. The referee had no option but to send Smith off for the crude challenge in the 33rd minute.
Glory took the initiative with the extra man and made the running with Boi sending a through ball to Skorich whose clever flick at goal was deflected off Sherlock into the side netting and away for a corner. Boi again turned provider as he fed the ball to Doyle to let go a shot from distance that whizzed low and hard just wide of the upright.
The second half opened with the Glory boys looking to take advantage of the extra man as they threw players forward looking to break the deadlock. The goal they were searching for came in the 57th minute after great work by Skorich on the wide right byline where he beat two opponents and squared the ball into the path of danger man Boi who placed his shot at goal perfectly into the corner giving keeper Redmayne no chance.
Coach Naven brought on the fresh legs of Howard Fondyke, Reece Vittiglia and James Sammut as he rested the hard working midfield of Boi, Jukic and Luca. Their introduction saw more attacking moves as Sammut sent a perfect cross to Brent Griffiths whose header sailed just over the bar in the 67th minute.
Sammut and Evans combined well down the left flank in the 71st minute with Evans squaring a lovely ball to Fondyke whose goal bound shot was well saved by Redmayne. The Glory rampage continued with Sammut and Fondyke creating another two chances that could well have put Glory further in front if not for lady luck and stout defending from the Mariners.
Central Coast showed some good signs with defender Sherlock amongst the best while the Perth Glory side was a total team effort with no passengers in a sharp display of precision football.
Next week the Glory travel to Melbourne to face the Melbourne Victory in what promises to be an entertaining clash.

21.09.08 - Lions miss out on top four
The Lions gallant quest for a top four finish ended on Saturday after a 2-2 draw against Armadale in round 22 of the Football West Premier League at Alfred Skeet Oval. Results elsewhere didn’t go the Lions way either so even a win would have seen them finish out of the top four.
The Lions dominated early Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock produced two stunning saves inside the first five minutes to deny Jordan Rhodes and Phil Arnold so it came somewhat of a surprise when Armadale took the lead on 14 minutes. Midfielder John Lund was given too much space and his 25-yard right foot strike cannoned in off the post with Phil Straker helpless.
The Lions were level on 32 minutes when Dean Evans (left) converted from the spot after a Kodi Madeley tackle on Steve Hesketh in the box. The Lions were ahead just before half time when Ludo Boi took advantage after a mix up between Shannon Dally and Matt Bennion deep in defence and he fired home from the edge of the box past a startled Sharrock.
With results from around the grounds going against the Lions Armadale snatched the equaliser 10 minutes from time through Ryan Pearson. (Full report later)

Stirling Lions 18’s and 23’s Champions
It was a fantastic day for the Lions yesterday when both the 18’s and 23’s won their respective league titles with victories at Armadale. The under 18’s (right) started the day needing a point to take out the title and two second half goals from Ndumba Makeche gave them a 2-0 victory.
Under 18’s Coach Joe Pugliese was delighted for the players. “It’s been a long season but Doug and I are delighted for the players. We have a great team mentality within the player group which we’ve had all season. We get individuals stepping up every week but it’s always a team effort,” said Pugliese.
Lions Coach Doug Hesketh is in the UK at the moment but was delighted to receive a phone call at 5.30am from Joe with the players singing in the background. “I’m delighted to have won the league and to go undefeated all season and to only concede 10 goals is a bit special, well done boys!!!!!!” said Hesketh.
With the youngster celebrating their win it was the turn of Gary Williams’ under 23’s (below), too take on Armadale knowing a victory would almost see them win the league. It was a nervous opening but in the end led by captain courageous Damien Houston they ran out 3-0 winners to take the title from Inglewood United and the NTC in a close tussle. On target for the Lions 23’s were Keith Clevenger 2 and Houston.
Coach Gary Williams was delighted after the game. “I’m very, very pleased to have won the league. It was tough opening to the game but I think it was down to bit of nerves from the players. We then took control and could have scored a few more goals.
“It a magnificent achievement for the side, I’ve said before, it show’s the clubs youth policy is working well and a lot of the credit must go down to Michael Lyons who is always willing to promote youth at the club and with us and the 18’s winning first title’s for the Stirling Lions Soccer club proves the point,” said Williams.
For Lions President Don Evans it was a proud moment. “Today is the proudest moment in my time at the club, seeing the wealth of youth talented emerging at our club and for both sides to win the title was outstanding.
“It’s a first ever Premier league title for the sides in our history and the manner in which they won it was magnificent and credit must go to the coaching staff, Gary Williams, Doug Hesketh and Joe Pugliese, their work has been outstanding,” said Evans. |
19.09.08 - Lions look for top four spot at Armadale
The Lions go in search of three points tomorrow in their top four quest, when they travel for the final game of the Football West Premier League regular season, to meet Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval. (3pm)
The Lions are unbeaten in their last four games after victories at Swan IC, ECU Joondalup and Fremantle, while they drew at home to Mandurah City. Nothing more than three points will do for Michael Lyons’ side tomorrow and if other results in the league go their way, then the young Lions will be in the top four finals.
Lyons has been please with the sides end to the season and thought they fought out a tough game at Fremantle last week. “It was tough game last week, and wherever you go in the league you expect a tough game. We should have won by more goals but at the end of the day it’s three points. Results went our way last week so we’re still in the hunt for a top four finish,” said Lyons.
On Saturday’s game at Armadale Lyons knows it will be another tough game between two of the form sides in the league at present. “Armadale have performed as well as anyone in the league in the second half of the season. They introduced a few new faces and when they came to Macedonia Park earlier in the season they looked a good side. They are looking to overtake ECU at the bottom end of the table while we need a victory to maintain our push up the table it should be a great game,” added Lyons.
In team news Steve Porter will be missing again due to injury, but Alan Muir (left) is available again after serving his four match ban.
Armadale have been one of the form teams of late with just a single loss in nine outings. James Robinson, who’s bagged nine goals in eight weeks, makes his final appearance for the club and together with midfield maestro Gary Faria holds the key to their success. Keeper Cyril Sharrock has been in good form and he has held the backline of Mark Darby, Andy Bowyer, Matt Bennion and Daryl Platten together. In midfield Perth Glory Youth representee Ryan Pearson, Kodi Madeley and import John Lund have also been outstanding this season.
It should be a great game get along and support the Lions. The 18’s kick off at 11am, the 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $8 adults and $6 concessions. Under 15’s are admitted free.

Young Lions side’s push for the title
It not just the first team pushing for honours in the final game of the season, our under 18’s and 23’s are both heading into the game with the prospect of taking out their respective leagues. For Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s a point is needed to take the title, with Floreat Athena breathing down their necks: Athena are away to ECU Joondalup in the final game.
Doug Hesketh is in the UK on business on Saturday, Joe Pugliese will take over, but before departing he said he hopes the side can get the victory. “ The lads played well at Fremantle last week, and we controlled the game in total but our passing especially in the final 3rd let us down. Freo scored against the run of play and we had to dig deep, Ndumba Makeche equalised and we could have won it with shots from Remo Venditti, Thomas Kennedy & Cameron Sutton. They have been superb all year 21 games undefeated and the best defence in the league, we just have to get a result on Saturday,” said Hesketh.
It could be a double celebration for the Lions with Gary Williams’ under 23’s sitting on top of the table and a victory against Armadale would almost certainly give them the title. It would mean second placed Inglewood United would have to beat Fremantle Spirit by three more goals than the Lion’s score against Armadale, so goals will be important for Williams’ side. “First off all we’ve got to win the game and if we do that and we can score a few goals it will make it harder for Inglewood United who is level with us but we have a better goal difference. I’ve told the boys we’ve got to go out and attack Armadale and then it’s in our own hands. They have improved in recent weeks so it will give the game a little more spice,” said Williams.
Lions’ senior Coach Michael Lyons hopes it’s a triple celebration tomorrow. “It could be a great day for our club tomorrow. We could win the under 18 and under 23 league titles with victories and we could make the top four finals, which would be fantastic achievement from everyone involved at the club. If that comes off I’ll be a very happy man,” said Lyons.
Williams added: “If we achieve the triple celebrations tomorrow it will show we’re heading in the right direction at Macedonia Park and our Youth policy is coming to fruition”.

Last time we met Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval
Armadale 0 Stirling Lion 0 - Football West Premier League Round 2 - 2007
The last time we met Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval, it ended in a 0-0 draw in round two last season.
The best chance of the first half came on 14 minutes when, following an Armadale corner, Marlon Ramirez stabbed the ball high from 5-metres. Other than that, chances were few and far between in an opening period in which Stirling was unable to breakdown the defensive style of Armadale, who battled hard and worked tirelessly.
It wasn’t until late in the half that David Dugdale finally broke through only to place wide in a one-on-one with Cyril Sharrock. Stirling introduced teenage sensation Ludovic Boi as well as Tommy Jones at the break in an attempt to open up a well-drilled home backline lead by Lee Hallums and Darryl Platten.
However, it would be the home team which stepped up a gear in the second half and on 56 minutes Darren Kingston’s powerful header from 9-metres was acrobatically kept out by Stirling custodian Phil Straker (left). The eastern corridor side created another great opportunity on 72 minutes when, from near the corner flag, Adam Galvin crossed perfectly for Ryan Pearson who shot high from close-range much to the disappointment of the home crowd.
Leo Harman should have given Stirling the lead six minutes later after intercepting a poor back-pass inside the 18-yard box but his shot cannoned back off the inside of the far post. Soon after Boi sent in a cross to Keith Brown who rushed his shot over the crossbar as Stirling came home under full steam. The last chance of the afternoon fell to Harman who was left unmarked at a final minute corner which he headed high from 7-metres.

14.08.09 - Lions still in the mix after victory against the Spirit (by Football West reporter Tim Lefort)
Fremantle Spirit 0 Stirling Lions 1
The Lions kept their hopes of a top-four place alive with a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Fremantle Spirit at Wauhop Park. An own goal from Cameron Hayes after 14 minutes proved to be the difference but, in truth, the Lions could — and should — have won by a far more comfortable margin.
Results elsewhere mean the Lions travel to Armadale next week for their final fixture knowing victory — and a slip-up by Inglewood and Mandurah — could yet see them playing finals football.
The home side were on the back foot as early as the fifth minute when Keith Clevenger picked up a loose ball but could only find the side netting from a tight angle.
Spirit keeper Steve Grant was then called upon to save Jordan Rhodes' low drive from distance, before Peter Vukmirovic fired well over from 20-yards for the hosts after running on to Sam Carrello's headed flick-on.
Then on 14 minutes Mick Lyons' side took the lead. Phil Arnold (right) and Clevenger exchanged a brilliant one-two on the edge of the Fremantle box. Arnold's initial shot was blocked but in the ensuing scramble Hayes put the ball into his own net under pressure from Rhodes.
Fremantle fought back and Joe Moffat’s glancing header was just wide from a free-kick, then Cisco Jorquere drilled a low volley across the face of goal and just beyond the far post.
Stirling's Marc Anthony (left) was off-target from 20 yards, and then six minutes before the break the visitors nearly doubled their lead.
Arnold did well to beat his opponent and his low cross caused all sorts of problems for the Fremantle defence who were relieved to see Ashley Rosindale's glancing header fly wide when Rhodes finally whipped the ball back in.
Fremantle had a rare opportunity but Lions keeper Phil Straker was easily able to hold onto Vukmirovic's low angled strike. The giant defender-turned-striker had another chance moment later but his near-post header from Jason Barerra's corner was inches over the bar.
That may have served as a wake-up call to Stirling because they were on the attack immediately after the interval. Not for the first time, a long throw from Arnold caused havoc in the home defence and Rosindale's snap shot from close-range was only inches over the bar.
After 58 minutes Rhodes' wickedly delivered cross-shot was well held by Grant, then moments later at the other end Vukmirovic pounced on a mistake by Dean Evans but saw his clipped effort from the edge of the area deflected over the bar for a corner.
Within 60 seconds the Lions went within inches of making it 2-0 and giving themselves some breathing space. After finding Clevenger, Anthony continued his run forward and met the return pass on the volley but could only watch in frustration as his effort skewed agonisingly wide of the upright.
Fremantle had another lucky escape moments later when Steve Hesketh’s in swinging corner was headed off the line at the far post by Jorquere.
The hosts countered but Simon Elton-Bott couldn't keep his volley down, before Rosindale was denied twice in a matter of seconds by a desperate home defence.
After 61 minutes Michael Pugliese picked out the busy Anthony with a raking cross field pass and, after a good first touch, the midfielder's shot was deflected over for a corner.
Vukmirovic fired wide for the Spirit on 70 minutes and that proved to be his last involvement as he made way for Luke Doyle shortly after.
Still the visitors looked the more likely to score and in the space of two minutes, Rhodes saw a shot from point-blank range charged down, and then Clevenger sent a free header over from a corner.
Elton-Bott was shown the first yellow card of the game, then Doyle gave the ball away but breathed a sigh of relief when Anthony sliced Arnold's cutback wide from eight yards.
But it mattered not as Lyons' side comfortably held on to pick up what could yet prove to be three very important points.
The Lions boss said: "You go anywhere away and get the three points and you're happy. "We went to Swan last week and got three points, we've gone away this week and got three points so obviously I'm pleased." While the one goal proved enough in the end, Lyons felt his side should have won more comfortably. "It was one of those games — it was just going one side of the post then just wide of the other post," he said. "In the end we should have scored quite a few more goals but when it's like that, often the other side will go to the other end and score a goal against you."
In other results Gary Williams’ 23’s run out 1-0 winners against Fremantle to keep the lead at the top of the table and will need a win at Armadale next week to win the league, while Doug Hesketh’s 18’s drew 1-1 at Fremantle and will need a point at Armadale next week to claim the title.

12.09.08 - Lions visit Wauhop Park in round 21
The Lions are on the road again this week when they meet Fremantle Spirit at Wauhop Park in round 21 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday (3pm) Lions Coach Michael Lyons was pleased with the sides performance at Swan IC last week and he hopes they can continue it against the Spirit. “It was a good win at Swan last week. We had a number of players out so to go there, where they had only lost once all season, and get the points was great,” said Lyons.
He was pleased with the whole team’s performance. “I thought Michael Pugliese (right) and Dean Evans were outstanding last week and it show’s how far the young pair has come on in recent weeks. Deano has been selected in the Glory Youth side, while Michael has been our most consistent player in the second half of the season it was a solid defensive display at Francis Street.
“It was great to see Ashley get on the scoresheet he works really hard for the side, and another pleasing thing to come out of the game was the great performance from Marc Anthony, “explained Lyons.
The Freo game is another big test for the young Lions side, and one Lyons is looking forward to. “There’s still a slight chance we can make the top four finals so we’ll go there with the same intensity as we did last week. Yes, we need results elsewhere to go our way, but we can’t worry about that we’ve got to get the result first,” said Lyons.
The Lion’s 23’s moved to the top of the table in midweek and with the 18’s also on top of the table, Lyons is pleased with the clubs progress. “Tuesday’s result for the 23’s against the NTC squad was fantastic, sending Gary Williams’ side to the top of the table, while Doug Hesketh’s 18’s can win the league on Saturday with a point at Fremantle. It’s great news for the club and if we can make the top four it will put the icing on the cake,” added Lyons.
It’s a big game for the Straker family with Lions keeper Phil up against his brother, Spirit defender Tom, but Lyons has had first hand experience when brothers clash in his time at Everton. “We played Birmingham City and in goal for them was Dave Latchford and our centre forward was his brother Bob. During the game Bob was sent clear and he went straight through his brother and was sent off, no brotherly love there,” joked Lyons.
In team news Steve Porter and Rory Feely are still doubtful through injury and Alan Muir is still suspended. Fremantle, who haven’t won a game this season, will be with out Cisco Jorquere, Lewin Bake and Callum Roberts due to suspension. They are coming off a nine thriller last week when they lost 4-5 to Armadale, and Marc Wingell will look to break there duck this weekend so it should be a great game.
Get along and support the Lions, under 18’s kick off at 11am, under23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $8 adults, $6 concessions and under 5’s are admitted free.

Last time we met the Spirit away from home
Fremantle Spirit 0 Lions 1 – Round 11 – 30.06.07
The Last time we met the Spirit away from home, a late penalty converted by captain Kevin Henderson was enough to secure Stirling Lions maximum points against a brave and tenacious Spirit at the WA Spanish Club. Quickest out of the blocks were Stirling who controlled play through the central pairing of Keith Brown and Steve Porter.
The first real opening came after 25 minutes when David Dugdale's low shot was held by Steve Grant. Stirling pressed threatened again a minute later via an in-swinging Porter corner which Fremantle captain Dale Wingell cleared from off the goal line. A classy exchange between Porter and Dugdale provided Andy Brown with a clear shot on goal only for the big striker to sky his shot from point-blank range.
A speedy break lead to an opening for Fremantle as Wingell released Ravi Kuppasamy Barrera whose passage to goal was blocked by a diving Phil Straker. The scrappy nature of the game continued into the second half with both sides battling strong winds and a shifting surface.
An innocuous tackle by Andy Brown on Oliver Gillingham lead to the referee issuing the Stirling attacker a red card on 70 minutes, much to the dismay of the visiting supporters. A brilliant piercing run by teenager Callum Roberts took him past a tiring defence and one-on-one with Straker whose superb save kept Stirling in the hunt.
The addition of Daniel Micevski and Tom Jones swung the game in the visitors favour and through a series of free-kicks and corners the pressure slowly mounted on the home team. With 89 minutes gone Stirling were awarded a penalty for a seemingly innocent challenge by Mark Darby on Dugdale, and up stepped Henderson (above) to drill the games' only goal past Grant.

Straker Brothers head for Battle
Many people say football is more than a game; it will be on Saturday when brothers Phil and Tom Straker play against each other when Fremantle Spirit hosts Stirling Lions. Both sides have struggled this season although the Lions have improved in recent weeks and a victory at Wauhop Park will keep their slim hopes of a top four finish alive.
Lions’ keeper Phil (right) believes the season could end on a high for the Macedonia Park club. “We’ve been a little inconsistent this season but the young lads have come of age for us especially towards the later part of the season. Dean Evans and Ludovic Boi making the Glory youth side is just a taste of the young boys coming through the Lions youth system and this group of players coming through could help bring back the winning days of the past for the supporters,” said Phil.
He added: “I believe if we win our last two games and results go our way then who knows fingers crossed we could make the top four. Looking at our fixture list at the beginning of the season I always said that we would finish strong and peak at the right time and hopefully this will be the case and sneak into the top four giving us something to play, especially after the disappointing defeat in the cup against Joondalup.
For defender Tom (left) the season for the Spirit has been very disappointing but he hopes to end the season on a high. “Disappointing would be an understatement I think, however it has still being an enjoyable season and the younger players including myself have learnt some valuable lessons and I'm sure we'll all be the better for the experience. I’m confident we can bounce back; we did it two years ago so we can certainly do it again,” said Tom.
Early in the season the Spirit were playing well but couldn't get the win under your belt, which was frustrating for all concerned. “I think if you asked any of the teams we've played this year we've been extremely unlucky. I’m not really one for excuses but we've played some fantastic football in patches, but as we know that does not win you games, hard work and consistency wins matches and we've been found wanting in those areas this year,” added Tom.
The game will divide the Straker household and both are looking forward to it. Tom said: “I look forward to every game, but playing against Phil is always great, especially for the old man who regularly has to toss a coin to decide who he’s going to watch.”
“We haven’t had the best results against Stirling and there’s a bit of pride at stake, even more so when your brother is on the opposite side. He’s having another superb season so there may have to be some serious sabotage to throw him off his game,” joked Tom.
Phil said: “I’m definitely looking forward to playing my brothers team although I don’t really get chance to come up against Tom much in the game but I’m still waiting for the day when he pops up and shanks one past me into the top corner, I’ll never live it down fingers crossed that wont happen on the weekend and we take all three points.”
What would Tom do if it was 1-1 in the 92nd minute and the Spirit got a penalty; would he put his hand up to score past Phil. “ Mate, I couldn't hit a cows arse with a sledge hammer at the moment so I'll leave that to one of the forwards! I will however be barn storming a few corners and trying my best to keep the goals at the other end to zero,’ said Tom.
Both arrived in Australia in 2002, Phil played for Sunderland Youth and Reserves sides while Tom played at York City and then Sunderland academy till he was 17 and from there he played in the Northern league for Marske United.
It’s a busy time off the park for Phil, who is getting married to his fiancée Corinne in five weeks. While on the pitch Phil, who won the 2007 Kelme Goalkeeper of the Year last season, has been selected in the WA state squad this season and he is hoping to make the final side. “Getting a call up to the state team puts the icing on the cake for me this season, it’s been a while since WA has had a state team and I’m stoked to be included in the squad.
“The award last year was a very proud moment for me. I haven’t won much individual awards since I started playing and to be honest I was a bit shocked when my name was called as I had convinced myself that the Dino the Cockburn keeper had the award in the bag. Last season was a very good season for Stirling lions winning the cup and finishing strong in the league and with me winning the goalkeeper award topped it for me! As for this season and the awards, there has been a lot of inform keepers so the award could be anyone’s,” explained Phil. |
Rosindale keeps Lions in the hunt
Swan IC 0 Stirling Lions 2
Jordan Rhodes and Ashley Rosindale found the target as Stirling Lions headed home from the Swan Italian Club with a 2-0 win over hosts Swan I.C. Rhodes' in-swinging corner forced an early save out of Cory Hugo as the ball threatened to curl inside the back post.
Swan's eventually settled and in an eventful eight minutes bust Alex Cocking blazed high from close-range and Damian Scali fired wide from distance while Phil Straker was out quick to snaffle Brendan Knox's through ball intended for Cocking. Keith Clevenger's goalbound effort was blocked by Chris Marshall after poor defending at Rosindale's cross from the right.
Both teams had their chances late in the half as David McNally volleyed straight at Straker from 14-metres, while Stirling failed to capitalise after Cory Hugo was left writhing on the ground following a collision with Phil Arnold.
Stirling shrugged off a slow start to the second half by taking control of the game through the combined efforts of Rhodes, Rosindale and Anthony. Dean Evans' curling free-kick was well saved by Cory Hugo on the hour, then minutes later Rosindale delivered the ball to Rhodes but he fired wide from 5-metres. Their pressure paid off on 69 minutes when Steven Hesketh slotted in to Anthony whose shot from 15-metres deflected for Rhodes (left) to blast into the net through a crowded penalty area.
With this the visitors lifted and a neat exchange between Ludovic Boi and Anthony set-up Rosindale who placed wide from close-range. Swan almost equalised when Dom Ando's cross picked out an unmarked McNally but Straker was alert to save and Michael Pugliese put his body on the line to repel Scali's follow-up. Rhodes fired high as Stirling looked to seal the game, while Scali sent his shot past the upright in a pulsating final ten minutes.
The turning point came when Justin Hugo was issued his second yellow card by referee Kevin Taylor in the 84th minute. Stirling made the most of the extra man seven minutes later as Boi's cross from the right was spectacularly volleyed past the 'keeper by Rosindale from 8-metres.
Lions coach Michael Lyons was happy with the victory. “They’ve only lost once at home this season so to win is a great effort from the lads and while it’s still mathematically possible we can reach the top four we’ll be doing all we can for the rest of the season,” said Lyons.
On Rosindale’s goal Lyons was delighted for him. “He works really hard in a game and he’s a bright intelligent player and reacts well both defensively and offensively. He was rewarded with a great goal, an overhead kick in the last minute, I’m delighted for him,” added Lyons.

A great opportunity for young Lions players on Thursday evening when Perth Glory players will be at Macedonia Park to run some training drills and sign autographs for the Lions juniors starting at 5pm.
Lions President Don Evans hopes all the juniors can get along to meet their heroes. ‘It’s great for our club to have the Glory at Macedonia Park. “With Michael Lyons on board to develop the players we've produced some talented players and with Dean Evans and Ludovic Boi progressing to the Glory Youth side, the kids can see there is a path to top football here in WA,” added Evans

06.09.08 - Rosindale keeps Lions in the hunt
Stirling Lions faint hopes of a top four finish are still alive after Jordan Rhodes and Ashley Rosindale gave them a hard fought 2-0 win against Swan IC at Francis Street in round 20 of the Football West Premier League on Saturday.
Two second half goals were enough for Michael Lyons’ side, the first a well taken strike from Jordan Rhodes (left) on 69 minutes, the second a contender for ‘Goal of the season’ Ludovic Boi’s cross from the right found Ashley Rosindale who spectacularly volleyed past Cory Hugo. (Full report later)
It was a good day for the Lions at Francis Street. Gary Williams’ 23’s won 2-1 while Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s drew 1-1 with the Swans, a win would have given them the title. On target for the young Lion cubs was Chris Zito.

05.09.08 - Lions head to the Swan Valley in round 20
The Lions are on the road this weekend when they travel to Francis Street (Swan Italian Club) to take on Swan IC in round 20 of the Football West premier league on Saturday. (3pm)
A draw last week at home to Mandurah has made it difficult for the Lions to reach the top four finals but Coach Michael Lyons believes a good end to the season can show the players what could have been. “It was two points lost last weekend, we missed a few chances which would have given us the points but to be fair so did they.
“We were still pushing for the fourth spot in the table but the result last week and other results going against us it doesn’t look like we can make it now, but we’re determined to end the season with three victories starting at Swan on Saturday,” said Lyons.
The Lions have a good record in the Swan Valley and in the five visits in the Premier league since the Lions were promoted back they have won three, the most recent a 3-1 win last season when Leo Harman, David Dugdale and Phil Arnold were on target. Lyons always knows you will get a tough game at Francis Street and Paul Lincoln’s side have only lost once this season, something Lyons wasn’t aware of. “I didn’t know that, but when you go there it’s always is a difficult game.
“I think their best attacker is their goalkeeper Hugo, he’s got a great kick and he just launches the ball and they work it from there. It’s always interesting when we play them especially at there home, their ground slope’s a little like Yeovil’s ground back in the UK, but they know how to play it which will make for a good game and one we’re looking forward too,” said Lyons.
Lyons also praised the under 18’s and 23’s ahead of Saturday’s games with both in contention of winning their respective leagues. “A win on Saturday at Swan will give the under 18’s the title which will be a fantastic achievement for the lads, and a win for the 23’s will keep them in the mix for the title, which is great news for the club,” said Lyons.
In team news Alan Muir is still suspended but Lyons will have a full squad to choose from including Steven Hesketh who is returning after a long term injury.
The Swans are coming off a 1-4 thrashing at lowly Armadale last week, but have performed well at home this season with keeper Cory Hugo in great form between the sticks. Aaron Cole and youngster David McNally have formed a good partnership at the heart of the defence while striker Damian Scali is third in the leagues top goal scorers with 17 and will need to be watched closely as well as youngsters Geoff Mason and Alex Cocking.
Get along and support the Lions, Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s kick off at 11am, Gary Williams 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission at Francis Street is $8 adults, $6 concessions and under 15’s are admitted free.

Last time we met the Swans at Francis Street
Swan IC 1 Stirling Lions 3 – Round 4 – 05-05-07
The last time the Lions met the Swans at Francis Street a commanding first half display laid the foundations for Stirling Lions’ 3-1 win.
It took Stirling just six minutes to assert their authority as Ludovic Boi skipped past two defenders before crossing the back post where Leo Harman tapped in. With Steve Porter dominant in the middle of the park, the visitors continued to press as Kevin Henderson’s lob was cleared off the line by Anthony McStea, and Aaron Cole did likewise minutes later to frustrate David Dugdale.
Swan didn’t create a chance until midway through the period when David Foster forced Darko Ilomanoski into conceding possession only to have Phil Straker saved his low shot. The difference became two goals on the half hour as Boi slipped a pass to Dugdale who kept his composure in lobbing the on-coming Cory Hugo.
There was little more spark to Swans after the break as Foster headed wide from a McStea cross, and Geoff Mason’s fierce strike from 7-metres was brilliantly kept out by Straker. Swan were back in the game on 75 minutes when Damien Scali converted from the penalty spot after Straker was ruled to have brought Mason down inside the area.
With Swan now in control, Stirling were limited to playing on the counter attack and through such a move Keith Brown headed narrowly high from a Boi cross. The hosts received a massive setback on 88 minutes with the harsh dismissal of McStea for dissent by Jeremy Oliphant.
Wasting no time in making the most of the extra man, Stirling worked a third goal which Arnold shot low past Hugo. The day only got worse for Swan who saw out the final minutes with nine players following the red carding of David Perich for a second bookable offence.

Lions duo selected in State Squad
Stirling Lions duo Marc Anthony (right) and Phil Straker have been selected in the WA state squad for the up-coming clash against South Australia in Adelaide in October.
WA coach Robbie Dunn has selected a 32 man squad in preparation for the Stratco Cup clash on October 11. The squad commenced training on Wednesday and will be trimmed before they are due to depart for Adelaide for the clash at Marsden Sports Complex.
Dunn has been delighted at the response from the players so far in making themselves available for selection.
“The players can now see that Football West are serious about the State team and have been brilliant in making themselves available” said Dunn.
“It is a great honour to play for your state and we had Scott Bulloch sign with the Perth Glory on the back of his performance for the state side against them in June”.
“I am confident that we will have our A-team available and primed for action come October 11 to knock off the ‘crow eaters’ and bring the Stratco Cup back to WA”.
Lions Coach Michael Lyons was delighted for the duo. “Their selection in the preliminary squad is a reward for an excellent season for the Lions,” said Lyons.
Anthony has had a number of knock backs this season but Lyons believes he’s a quality player. “He scored a tremendous goal last week against Mandurah City, and he’s had a number of knock backs this season with the Glory deciding not to sign him after he had performed well for them in their pre-season trip,” explained Lyons.
His presence on the park has been something Lyons believes has helped his young side this season “He’s an outstanding player and he has been great for me on the pitch as the young lads can learn a lot from him. Without Darko and Hendo it’s been a very inexperienced side we’ve played and Marc has been great with them.
‘I’ve always said the best Coaches are the experience players on the pitch telling the kids were they have gone wrong and pointed them in the right direction and Marc does that. When he’s on top form he’s an exceptional player and there isn’t anyone better in the league in my opinion,” added Lyons.
Straker (left) has been a pillar of strength in goal for the Lions this season and Lyons believes there is none better in the league. “Phil has been outstanding ever since he has been at Macedonia Park. He was a well deserved winner of the 2007 Goalkeeper of the Year, and his steading influence has helped us especially with our young back line in front of him,” said Lyons.
Preliminary WA State Men’s Squad:
Andy Brown, Phil O’Callaghan (Mandurah City), Liam Lilley, Johnny Mirco, (Cockburn City), Callum Roberts, Jason Barrera (Fremantle Spirit), Luka Jukic, David Micevski (Western Knights), John Lund, Darryl Platten (Armadale), Aaron Cole, Damian Scali (Swan IC), Antonio Naglieri, Greg Sharland, Matt Danskin, David Onoforo, Gareth Deeg, Todd Howarth (Perth SC), Stuart Montgomery, Todd Harnwell, Neil Young (Sorrento), Ian McMurray, Craig Young (ECU Joondalup), Jason Colli, Shayne Pryce (Inglewood), Adam Bachillor, John Migas, Ante Kovacevic, Daniel Niederberger, Brad Scott (Floreat Athena), Marc Anthony, Phil Straker (Stirling Lions)

Stirling Lions 1 v Mandurah City 1
The Stirling Lions fought out a gritty 1-1 draw with Football West premier league newcomers Mandurah City at Macedonia Park on Saturday.
Both sides started tentatively and there was little goal mouth action for the first 20 minutes when, on 23 minutes, a long ball from Mandurah's veteran defender, Gary Collins, was handled by Lions' defender Michael Pugliese under pressure from Phil O'Callaghan.
Much to the dismay of the home support referee, Ton Klaver, pointed to the spot for a penalty and Phil O'Callaghan stroked the ball home past the unfortunate Lions' keeper, Phil Straker, who very nearly saved the shot with his trailing leg.
Former Mandurah midfielder, Jordan Rhodes, was unlucky soon after as his run into the box was halted by a saving tackle from Ryan Townsend.
Mandurah should have extended their lead as a long throw in from Jay Bonser found O'Callaghan whose effort was well saved by Straker.
With half time looming Stirling midfielder, Mark Anthony (right), put his side level in the 42nd minute with an exceptional individual goal. Anthony picked the ball up in the middle of the park and ran at the Dolphins' defence avoiding two challenges before he placed the ball wide of Mandurah keeper, Michael Green.
The Lions should have gone ahead shortly after the break as Anthony rounded keeper Green and pulled the ball back across the goal for young Matt Italiano. Italiano's shot was blocked on the line by his own player, Jake Geddes, who was then ruled offside as he attempted to retrieve the situation.
Christian Paschkewitz might have given Mandurah the lead once more midway through the half as his cheeky back heel from a cross by O'Callaghan was cleared off the Lions' goal line and Gary Attrill went close as he followed up on a fine save by Straker only for his effort to be cleared off the Lions' goal line as well.
With 15 minutes to go the Lions' Phil Arnold wasted a golden opportunity to secure the points for the home side as he was found in acres of space on the left side of the Mandurah penalty area. Arnold skewed his shot high and wide when he really should have hit the target.
Mandurah were reduced to ten men with ten minutes to go as Jeff Bright was shown a second yellow for allegedly kicking the ball away after a bone-crunching challenge by Mandurah's Ryan McDarby was penalised by referee Klaver.
The reduction in men seemed to make little difference though as the game faded somewhat with both teams seemingly pleased to accept a point apiece.
Lions coach Michael Lyons said: “We had a big chance in the second half which could have settled it but it unfortunately hit one of our players. The pitch was a big factor as we've got a lot of players who like to play the ball around but all in all a draw is a fair result."

30.08.08 - Lions held at home by Mandurah
Stirling Lions were held at home 1-1 by Mandurah City in Saturday’s round 19 clash in the Football West Premier League at Macedonia Park.
A victory to the Lions would have moved them to within one point of the Dolphins in the league, but it was the visitors were out of the blocks quickly and the league’s top goalscorer Phil O’Callaghan put them in front in the 13 th minute. The Lions rallied and three minutes before the break Marc Anthony (right) levelled. (Full report later)
In other games Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s took another step to the Championship with a 9-0 victory against Mandurah. 29.08.08 - Lions host the Dolphins in round 19
The Lions entertain Mandurah City at Macedonia Park on Saturday in round 19 of the Football West Premier league (3pm).
A victory over Stuart Currie’s side will move the Lions to within one point of them in fifth position and assistant Coach Paul ‘Geordie’ Simmons (right) hopes they carry on from last weeks good win at ECU Joondalup. “Last week ECU scored really against the run of play to take the lead but basically we made a few changes to counter act their formation and it was one- way traffic after that and the lads played really well,” said Simmons.
Many people have written off the Lions top four chances but Simmons believes they are now back to a full strength squad and they will be pushing hard on Saturday and the rest of the season. “It was a good game down at the Hyundai Stadium when we draw 1-1, but we are confident heading into the game and lads have trained hard this week and we have to build on last weeks performance against a good City side,” added Simmons.
In team news Michael Lyons has a full squad to choose from except Alan Muir who is suspended. Steven Hesketh is close to a recall after long term injury, while Andy Brown (left) is getting back to fitness after his injury.
Mandurah will be looking for three points on Saturday after slipping up at home to Armadale last weekend which robbed them a top four place. Phil O'Callaghan played the starring role with another two goals, and the leagues top goalscorer will need to be watched closely by the Lions. Christian Pascherwitz and Gary Attrill will provide them with an extra avenue to goal and skipper Andy Brown anchors the midfield.
Get along and support the Lions – The undefeated Under 18’s kick off at 11pm, the 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission Prices are $8 adults $6 concessions and under 16’s are admitted free.

President Don Evans’ Message
It's the last home game of the season as we welcome newly promoted trailblazers Mandurah City to Macedonia Park for Round 19 of the Football West premier league big match against our Stirling Lions. Our clashes in previous meetings when we were both in the first division were always tight tussles with a feast of goals and quality football.
I would like to offer a warm Macedonia Park welcome to the Mandurah City President Todd Jenkins and all his committee, coaches, players and supporters on what promises to be a classic encounter. Todd has been a breath of fresh air for our code in the Mandurah region helping bond all the community and football fans into a vibrant and professional club that has made a big impact on all how have travelled to Peelwood Parade. The facility there is a credit to all who helped in its establishment and will serve our game well in the future years. Also a big pat on the back to ex Macie player Kirk O'Connor who videos the match day action and runs a fantastic website for the Mandurah faithful and the football public.
The last time the two teams met we witnessed a titanic tussle with the points being shared on a night where football was the winner. Our boys go into today’s game full of confidence after a well earned 4-1 victory at ECU Joondalup last week. It was great to see Stevie Porter, Marc Anthony and Jordan Rhodes help lift our youngsters to great heights coming back from a goal down to over run the ECU side. Ludo Boi was at his brilliant best with Captain for the day Phil Arnold working hard all day and helping create goal scoring opportunities. 18 year old Keith Clevenger will remember his debut scoring a strikers goal early in the second half and working tirelessly with just reward. It was great to see the boys bounce back after the disappointment of a 3-1 loss to Perth when we were reduced to 10 men in the second half with Alan Muir having a rare moment of madness and receiving his second yellow card.
The Reserves and 18's Youth teams have been in sparkling form with the Resies now challenging for the top spot and chasing Inglewood, while the 18's have accepted every challenge and are unbeaten on the top of the table with 4 games remaining. The Under 18's had a dramatic win in the Soccer Pools Cup semi final on Tuesday night at Clipsal Stadium where they overcame a belligerent opponent in Perth soccer club, eventually winning 3-2 in a penalty shoot out after score were tied at 1 all in normal time. The boys now have the chance for an unprecedented double for our club with Cup and Championship honours in the palm of their hands............Keep up the great work boys, you are a credit to yourselves and your coaches!!!
As it's the final program for the year I would like to thank all that have supported our great club in many different areas......firstly to the Macedonian Community of WA a big thanks for providing such as great venue for our teams and supporters, without your help we would be the poorer. To all our fantastic sponsors who have stepped up this year to assist in the many areas where funds are required to help keep the club ticking over.......a super big THANK YOU. To all the volunteer workers who have helped with marshaling, security, line marking, cleaning, working behind the bar or canteen (a big thumbs up to John Chadwick in the kitchen and his super Stirling burgers!!)......people like you are invaluable and play a major role on match day, THANKS for the great help. Finally to all my committee and their partners who have to put up with not seeing each other when football duty calls........you are the backbone of this mighty club and I personally THANK YOU all.
I look forward to seeing all our supporters and welcome Mandurah into the clubhouse after the game for some good old fashioned Macie Park hospitality when we have a beer and food and discuss the great days games we have witnessed. Have a great day here at Macedonia Park as we ROOAARRRRRRRRRR OUR MIGHTY LIONS ONTO ANOTHER GREAT VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lions 18’s through to Soccer Pools Cup Final
Lions 1 Perth SC 1 (Lions win 4-3 on Pens)
The Stirling Lions under 18’s have made it to the Soccer Pools Cup final after a dramatic penalty shoot out victory against Perth SC on Tuesday night at the Clipsal Stadium.
Doug Hesketh’s side, who are still unbeaten in the league, will be aiming for a league and cup double in the final against first Division leaders Forrestfield United.
The Lions dominated the first half and were ahead when David Sassey scored but the second half was a complete reserve with Perth dominating and they were rewarded with the equaliser from Oliver Swords.
It went to a penalty shoot out and keeper Matt Hill was the hero saving two penalties in the shoot out as the Lions won 4-3. Lions Coach Doug Hesketh was very pleased with the brilliant all-round team effort. “We dominated early and were well worth the lead, and if we had scored a second goal we would have seen them off, but they came into it in the second half and we were hanging on for a while,” said Hesketh.
With Perth SC first team Coach Graham Normanton in charge the Dorrien Gardens side pushed the league leaders all the way but Hesketh believes they deserve the win. ‘We had a couple of chances on the counter attack to win it late in the second half, but it went to penalties and Matt saved two and they hit the bar with one.
“We really dug deep in the second half and it showed what a good team spirit we’ve got in the side and it pulled us through in the end,” explained Hesketh. |
Rutherford finds his mark at the Lions Den
The Lions have unearthed some talented players this season and one to make an impression is defender Chris Rutherford. A centre back in the 18’s and 23’s, 18-year-old Rutherford has slotted into the right back role for Michael Lyons side and is enjoying the challenge. “I’ve really enjoyed it to date, it’s a lot more physical than I’ve been used to but I’m getting used to it now. You don’t have much time on the ball and it’s something I’ve worked hard on this season,” said Rutherford.
When injuries to Kevin Henderson and Steven Hesketh and the absence of Darko Ilomanoski the Lions backline was under a great deal of pressure, but Lyons and his assistant Paul Simmons but their faith in the young lion cubs and in one match the average age of the backline was 18. Rutherford believes the coaching staff have worked hard on the youngster and its bearing fruit at present. “Mick and Geordie have really worked hard on the little things that you need to make it to the next level in the game. They’ve both been great for me, especially Geordie who has taken me aside after training and told me what I can improve on and he’s always in my ear telling me what to do which has been great,” explained Rutherford.
Lions assistant Coach Paul Simmons has been delighted with the young defender. “Chris has done all right, his only a young lad and he’s keen as mustard. He’s got a great leap on him and he has no fear of putting the hard tackles in and we’re really pleased with him and he’s come on in leaps and bounds this season,” said Simmons.
It is a big game on Saturday for Rutherford and his team mates against Mandurah City, and the youngster knows the importance of a victory. “A victory is vital on Saturday and if results go our way else where the top four is definitely in our reach. We played well at ECU last week and we go into the game with confidence and hope for three points,” said Rutherford.
The defender hopes to continue with his improvement, and has his dad to thank for that. “My dad’s been a big influence in my football, and I’d like to thank him for all the travelling to and from training and match day’s,” added Rutherford.
Rutherford, an apprentice electrician, wasn’t tempted to try out for the Perth Glory Youth side this season as he believed it wasn’t the right time for him. “Me and Matt Italiano decided it wasn’t going to be the best thing for us at this moment in time but it’s great for Deano and Ludo making the squad and I wish therm all the best,” said Rutherford.
A junior at Hamersley Rovers, the defender then moved on to ECU Joondalup and was a part of the Saints Academy, before joining the Lions under 14’s. He hasn’t looked back from their playing under 18’s and 23’s at Macedonia Park before making his league debut this season.

Last Time we met the Dolphins at Macedonia Park
Lions 3 Mandurah City 1 - Round 10 Division One 2002
The Lions haven’t played the Dolphins at Macedonia Park in the Premier League, but the last time we met them was in round 10 in first division in 2002 the lions running out 3-1 winners.
It was the visitor’s worst day since entering Soccer West Coast ranks with all three sides losing.
The Lions started the senior fixture strongly against an undermanned Mandurah who were without six players due to injury and suspension. The home side created the better of the early chances courtesy of some penetrating runs by Toby Wright and overlapping fullback Andy Wright, only to find Neil Patten-Williams and Gary Collins on top of their game at the back for Mandurah.
A free-kick awarded after 20 minutes on top of the Lions 18-yard box found two home players unmarked at the back post, New Zealand-born Adam Rains (right) making no mistake to put his side into the lead. Soon after the re-start, the Lions won a corner which saw Andy Wright's powerful header amazing saved by Paul Dixon in the Mandurah goal.
The visitor’s best chance of the half came ten minutes before the interval, Mick Bobridge released by Andrew Rennie only to see his shot well saved by goalkeeper Rob Pucovski.
The second half started with Mandurah upping the tempo, only to go two goals down after 70 minutes when Robert Milevski (left) latched onto a through ball before despatching it past Dixon. As Mandurah searched to reduce the deficit they were left short at the back, the home side capitalising with Daniel Carlino making it 3-0 after being allowed space inside the 18-yard box.
Mandurah bagged a late consolation when substitute Barry Neylon picked out the unmarked Rennie who headed beyond the reach of Pucovski. Both the reserves and Under-18 games went in favour of the Lions 4-0 and 5-0 respectively.

Stirling Lions Youth Policy Pays Dividend
The ambitious plan to transform the Stirling Lions into a youth development focused club some 6 years ago has now been rewarded with three 18-year-old players selected by Perth Glory Youth coach Gareth Naven for this season's inaugural Hyundai Youth League. West Australian State team full back Dean Evans (right)was joined by midfield wizard Ludo Boi (left) and Lions junior and current NTC player, Adam Luca in the squad to play under the Perth Glory banner.
Evans has been with the Lions since age six while Boi and Luca joined the Stirling side through the Kings Academy some six years ago. All three have represented the State side at junior level and have come through the developmental process with flying colours.
Stirling Lions Director of Coaching Michael Lyons praised the efforts of the talented trio and said they were ready to face their next challenge of top flight youth football with the Perth Glory side. "Dean and Ludo in particular have played very well with our senior side this year and have shown our fans what great potential they possess. Dean has been versatile playing in defensive and midfield roles while Ludo has played an attacking midfield role. Everyone at our club wishes them well in their dream to become professional footballers."
Stirling president Don Evans is not just a proud leader of his club but also a very proud father watching his son earn a role in the newly formed Youth league side. Evans said "Our efforts to turn our club around eight years ago began with building a foundation where the home grown local talent would be given every opportunity to learn, enjoy and play football in an educational environment. These boys are very fortunate to have had developmental coaches like Alex Olejnik, Michael Garcia, Joe Pugliese and most importantly Michael Lyons help guide them into senior football. It is truly a proud day for me and the club having watched all these young men develop into quality footballers."
The teenagers will have their first taste of the Perth Youth League on the 26th of September when they travel to Queensland to meet the Central Coast Mariners. |
24.08.08 - Goal Hungry Lions beat ECU Joondalup 4-1 by Don Evans
An inspired virtuoso display by Perth Glory Youth team midfielder Ludovic Boi (right) helped the Stirling Lions to a convincing 4-1 win at the ECU Joondalup campus on Saturday. Boi scored in the first half and helped create another while traumatizing the Joondalup defence with his attacking flair.
Both teams were desperate for early dominance with the Lions on the attack through captain for the day Phil Arnold. Arnold had a gilt edged chance in the second minute but scuffed his shot with the goal at his mercy. Stirling exerted further pressure when defender Chris Rutherford found himself in a scoring position but again shooting wide after 10 minutes.
ECU Joondalup hit their straps with a fast break attack down the left flank and Martin Ashworth's cross found Tommy Amphlett unmarked on the edge of the box with his shot finding the back of the net to open the scoring in the 17th minute.
The Lions responded with some great work in the middle of the park from Stevie Porter and Ludo Boi, with Boi issuing an early warning when his shot on the run was well held by ECU keeper Chris McCrone. Stirling earnt a free kick when Boi was fouled in the 37th minute and Porter's (left) deceiving cross curled into the top corner of the net from 25 metres out.
Boi and Porter were in a menacing mood and took full central control helping the Lions to pile on the pressure as the half wore on.
An accurate long throw from Phil Arnold found the head of Rutherford who headed down to Boi with his volley on the turn rocketing into the roof of the net from 3 metres out in the 45th minute.
The Lions came out firing in the second half with Boi the midfield maestro executing a perfect through ball to 18 year old debutant Keith Clevenger who blasted home from 5 metres out in the 47th minute. Clevenger made an impressive debut showing great fight in the busy Lions forward line.
Just as the game appeared to be one way traffic for the Lions, ECU young gun Tommy Amphlett sent a blistering shot that brought off a great save from Stirling keeper Phil Straker in the 65th minute. ECU worked hard to regain some respect with Ian McMurray combining well with Craig Young and Amphlett.
Substitute Ricky Filicamo came on with immediate effect when he played a beautiful ball into Lions midfielder Jordan Rhodes (right) who calmy lobbed the advancing keeper from 20 metres out to add the final nail in the ECU Joondalup coffin in the 70th minute.
McMurray tried valiantly to lift his team with two great shots on goal after good lead up work by Scott Bushby and Amphlett, but it was to no avail with Stirling goalie Straker in a mean mood and denying the home team any further score.
It was a red letter day for the Lions with all 3 sides victorious with the Reserves 1-0 winners courtesy of a great header by captain Damien Houston and the undefeated Under 18's side 3-0 winners with Thomas Kennedy, John Omeedzadeh and Ndumba Makeche scoring for the young Lions.
Next week the Stirling Lions are at home to Mandurah City with a 3pm kick off at Macedonia Park. |
22.08.08 - Lions head to ECU Joondalup in round 18
The Lions are on the road this weekend with a trip to the ECU University Arena to take on ECU Joondalup (3pm)
Both sides have struggled in recent weeks and victory tomorrow is a must if the Lions are to regain a small glimpse of the top four come season’s end. For Lions defender Dean Evans, he believes it’s a big game for the club. “We will be looking to end the season on a positive note with victories starting on Saturday. We owe them one after they knocked us out of the cup earlier in the season but while we’ve still got a mathematical chance of the top four we’ll be fighting in every game for the rest of the season,” said Evans.
The youngster has taken extra responsibility this season taking the captains arm band with Darko Ilomanoski and Kevin Henderson unavailable and he’s relishing the job. “It’s always an honour to captain your side and it’s great for me after coming up through the ranks at Macedonia Park. We have many leaders on the park like Phil Straker, Jordan Rhodes and Mark Anthony and they all contribute,” added Evans.
In team news Alan Muir (left) season is over after receiving a four match suspension after being sent off against Perth SC last week, while there was good news on the injury front with Andy Brown and Steve Hesketh training well this week and they could be available for the game this weekend.
ECU will be without goalkeeper Bobson Karoma who was sent off against Armadale last week and could be without John Higgins who limped off early in their cup semi final loss against. The lions will have to watch the twin strike force of Ian McMurray and john Thornley, while Tommy Amphlett and Garin Collins have been in good form this season.

Lions trio bound for Glory
After an intensive selection process the Perth Glory Youth squad for 2008 has been selected with three Lions players being selected. Dean Evans, Ludovic Boi (right) and former Lions youngster and now NTC squad member Adam Luca have all been selected in the squad.
Glory youth Coach Gareth Naven had the arduous task of making the final selections for the inaugural Glory youth A-League side, and the squad has great depth.
For Evans it’s a great surprise but one he’s delighted with. “I was told on Wednesday night and was really pleased that all my hard work and effort has been all worth it,” said Evans.
Evans (left)was pleased with the Lions other two representatives, but also a little sad that two other Lions players missed out. “Its great news for the club with Ludo and Adam being selected but it was a surprise that Phil Arnold and Steven Hesketh weren’t in the squad,” said Evans.
Hesketh is still in the A-League side’s sights as he continues his rehabilitation after suffering a broken leg and has been invited to train with the side, so it could be four players from Macedonia Park in the squad.
Lions President Don Evans was delighted for all the players. “The club would like to congratulate the boys who have been selected and well done to the boys who were in the mix and missed out. The selection process would have been very tough with all the great talent Gareth had to pick from.
Good luck to all the boys and hopefully this team will be the stepping stone for many more ambitious and talented home-grown WA footballers,” said Don.
The Youth squad is:
Reece Vittiglia, Liam Harvey, Adam Luca (All NTC), Brent Griffiths (ECU), Howard Fondyke (AIS), Anthony Skorich (Western Knights), James Sammut (Inglewood Utd), Ryan Pearson (Armadale), Adrija Jukic (Perth), Ludovic Boi, Dean Evans (Stirling Lions), Scott Neville (Sorrento)

Last time we met ECU at the Arena
ECU Joondalup 1 Lions 2 - Round 22 - 29.09.07
Last time we met ECU at the Arena the home side’s hopes of completing the season without loss on home soil were dashed when the Lions triumphed 2-1 in an entertaining encounter.
All the early running came from Stirling as Captain Kevin Henderson headed high at close range from a long throw into the area. Four minutes later Ludovic Boi’s shot was blocked by a defender, and Matt Italiano lashed the rebound wide of the upright. A neat lead-up in the 18th minute put the ball with Andy Brown whose scorching volley whistled past the post.
The Lions got their just reward six minutes later when Andy Brown’s low centre made its’ way to Boi who was again thwarted by a defender, only this time the loose ball sat nicely for Leo Harman (right) to slot into the net from seven-yards. Ten minutes later Harman got past his marker with a sublime flick but faced with Andy Petterson he scooped the shot into the ‘keeper’s arms. The home side were struggling to assert themselves in attack but just moments from half-time, and completely against the run of play, they drew level courtesy of a searching cross field pass by Tommy Amphlett which picked out Howard Fondyke who kept his nerve to lob the advancing ‘keeper.
The second period followed the already familiar pattern of the first with Phil Arnold blazing high, and Keith Brown volleying narrowly wide as Stirling displayed the greater desire. Keith Brown seemed to feature every time the visitors went forward and it was his dangerous corner that lead to a goalmouth scramble which Joondalup somehow managed to prevent from crossing the line before scrambling the ball to safety. Stirling got the goal they were when Steve Hesketh delivered a long throw in to Andy Brown who glanced past Petterson and into the net for the winner.

17.08.08 - Perth SC home over a 10 man Lions
Stirling Lions 1 Perth SC 3
Perth Soccer Club cruised past the Stirling Lions with a comfortable 3-1 victory in the Football West premier league fixture played at Macedonia Park on Saturday. After an even first half where scores were tied at one a piece the Perth side made light work of it when Stirling midfielder Alan Muir was sent off only two minutes into the second half after receiving a second yellow card.
The match kicked off in warm sunny conditions with Perth needing to win to stay in the title hunt. Perth came out of the blocks looking to put the young Lion defence under pressure when Trent Kay headed narrowly wide after a pin point cross from Greg Sharland in the 15th minute. Perth appealed to referee Jeremy Oliphant for a penalty when Lions defender seemed to control the ball with his hand but play on was the call. Minutes later it was the Stirling side who almost snatched the lead from a Steve Porter in swinging corner who came to Perth's rescue as he headed off the line and away to safety.
The Lions attacked as one when Ludo Boi and Phil Arnold combined with Arnolds shot on goal deflecting away for a corner in the 25th minute. Perth rebounded through some great work in their midfield courtesy of Andrija Jukic and Antonio Naglieri earning them a corner in the 28th minute. Perth took the lead from the corner when Todd Howarth's cross was cleverly forced over the line from David Onoforo's thigh with the ball hitting the post on its way into the net.
The Lions sprung into action looking to restore balance as Ludo Boi (left) took on a cameo role in the middle of the park. The youngster who is in the running for a Perth Glory youth league position rocketed his shot at goal in the 42nd minute which flew into the net off the leg of Trent Kay. Stirling could well have gone into the break with the lead when Scottish import Marc Anthony's (right) half volley hit the top of the cross bar in the 44th minute.
Stirling were reduced to 10 men two minutes into the second half when Alan Muir received his second yellow card for a rash challenge on Naglieri. The game changed complexion immediately as Perth applied pressure on the Stirling defence. Perth took the lead when an audacious lob from Naglieri bounced into the net from 35 metres out with Lions keeper Phil Straker well off his line in the 60th minute. Perth were dominating and using the spare man effectively and launched another assault on the Lions goal with Steven Campbell's long range shot going just wide.
Phil Arnold and Ludo Boi worked tirelessly for the Lions, and the pair set Jordan Rhodes up for a shot on goal only to see his effort go inches wide. The Perth side made it 3-1 soon after from some good work out wide by Greg Sharland whose whipping cross eluded all the Lions defenders and Naglieri nipped in to head home from close range in the 68th minute.
The brave Lions battled hard and Arnolds jinxing run out wide saw him deliver a sharp cross to Michael Pugliese with his goal bound shot deflecting off Trent Kay’s tackle for a corner. The final act came from Onoforo who saw his header hit the post and cleared away to safety. Stirling was well served by Michael Pugliese, Ludo Boi and Phil Arnold while the Perth side played as a well drilled unit.
Stirling's Reserves notched up a great 4-1 win with goals coming from Jake Geddes, Rory Feely (2) and Keith Clevenger. The Under 18's remain undefeated and 7 points clear at the top of the table after a tough 1-1 draw with Chris Zito scoring for the young Lions

15.08.08 - Lions host Perth in Round 17
After last weeks disappointing 0-1 loss against a ten man Floreat Athena the Lions host Graham Normanton’s Perth SC on Saturday in round 17 of the Football West Premier League at Macedonia Park (3pm)
The Lions had the chances at the Litis Stadium but were not able to convert any and Michael Lyons is hoping for an improved performance against the side sitting in second place on the table. “We’ve got a very young side and our defence is probably the youngest in the league with Dean Evans, Michael Pugliese (left), Chris Harlond and Chris Rutherford, and they have all shown they can play at this level,” said Lyons.
It’s been a difficult start for new striker Ashley Rosindale, but he has shown a great deal of quality and Lyons hopes he can begin to finish the chances he’s been creating. “With Ashley, Jordan Rhodes and Phil Arnold again all players under 23, as for Ashley, he’s done well since he’s arrived and I was pleased he scored in his debut against Cockburn,” added Lyons.
There is always a good atmosphere when the Lions entertain Perth SC at Macedonia Park, and this weekend there will no exception. Perth are hot on the heals of the top two and they can’t afford any slip up’s. The form of Andrija Jukic has been excellent, while David Price and Greg Sharland continue to impress.

Last time we met Perth SC at Macedonia Park
Lions 0 Perth SC 6 - Round 9 - 17.6.07
The last time the Lions met Perth SC at Macedonia Park the championship credentials of Perth S.C. were flying at full mast as they demolished the home side 5-0.
The travelling supporters had to wait just 10 minutes before the commencement of celebration as Robbie Puca scored from the penalty spot after Barry Wood was impeded by Steve Hesketh. Perth continued their domination of the game with Wood firing high from close-range after a great build-up down the right featuring Scott Bulloch and Costa Socratous.
Rukavytsya netted the visitors second of the afternoon on 18 minute after combining with Wood to great effect. Two minutes later the margin was further increased courtesy of a defence splitting pass from Socratous which allowed Nikita Rukavytsya to race through and rifle past goalkeeper Phil Straker.
Stirling thought they’d pulled a goal back when Phil Arnold netted from a Keith Brown free-kick, however, the goal was ruled out for hand ball and Arnold yellow carded for his misdemeanour. Perth was in no mood for compromise and Wood headed in a Todd Howarth far post corner for goal number four. As the half came to a close both Wood and Rukavysta shot wide with only the ‘keeper to beat.
The second period was a far more even affair with Ludovic Boi (left) firing wide early as Stirling sought for a way back into the game. At the opposite end Rukavytsya fired past Straker only to have youngster Dannie Richman prevent the ball from crossing the line.
Stirling hopes were effectively dashed in the 57th minute when the dismissal of Keith Brown for a late challenge on Bulloch. Wood put the icing on Perth’s cake in the 68th minute when he converted at close range after being found unmarked inside the area by Howarth. Gary Faria should have further increased the difference late on but placed high of the crossbar from Matt Danskin’s cut back.
