09.05.08 - Lions host Floreat in round five
The Lions head home after last week’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Cockburn city in another big clash with traditional rivals Floreat Athena at Macedonia Park (3pm)
Mike Lyons was disappointed with the result last week after dominating Cockburn for 80% of the game. “It was a disappointing result saying we were 2-0 up and played a side with ten men for a majority of the game so yes we were all bitterly disappointed,” said Lyons.
But the Coach was happy with certain aspects of the performance. “We played some good football in the first half and were totally dominating the game. They got a sniff with their first goal and we paid the price with two dropped points,” added Lyons.
Lyons is expecting his side to bounce back in Saturday’s clash with traditional rivals Floreat Athena. “It has all the aspects for a good game, Floreat are a good side, and it shows when they went through last season undefeated. It’s always a tight game and it’s like a local derby with a bit of spice thrown in but the lads are looking forward to it and we hope it’s a good game for the supporters,”
added Lyons.
N ew striker Mark Redshaw has settled well in to WA football and with the return of midfield dynamo Steve Porter and Marc Anthony (left) the trio gives the young Lions side vital experience. At the back the Lions are still missing the injured Kevin Henderson, but Steven Hesketh continues to impress at the back along with Dean Evans.
Youngster’s Ludovic Boi and Dannie Richman have trained well this week and Lyons hopes they will play some part in the game on Saturday.
The 2007 Champions, Athena, have begun the season slowly, to their high standard that is. A hard fought 1-0 win against Armadale last week moved Michael Roki’s side in to fourth place on the table and new import Brad Smith was on target.
The form of Adam Bachiller, Garrin Collins and Rafeal Insurralde in the engine room for the side is vital, while new striker David Foster is taking time to settle into his new home at the Litis Stadium, but the 2006 golden boot winner will need to be watched closely if selected on Saturday.
It should be a great game so get along and support the Lions on Saturday, Doug’s under 18’s kick of at 11am, and Gary’s under 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions, under 15’s are admitted free.

Redshaw happy with the Lions life
He’s only played three games for the Lions, but already striker Mark Redshaw has shown his goods with four goa ls to date. The 23-year-old has settled into WA football well and is enjoying Perth. “Yes I’m really enjoying it at the moment, it’s been good and the club has made me really welcome. It also helps if you start well at a new club, and I’ve had a decent start and I’m loving Perth it’s a great place,” said Redshaw.
The striker is very impressed with the league and the coaching staff at the Lions. “I haven’t really played much semi-pro in the UK to be honest but what I have seen, I think it’s similar to here but in Australia the lads are fitter and stronger.
“The standard of coaching is excellent at the club, I think Michael and Paul are both really good coaches, I’ve only been here a few weeks but what I’ve seen I’ve been really impressed, there good men of the pitch as well, Geordie loves the banter, a typical English lad,” joked Redshaw.
Redshaw, whose girlfriend for five years Jenna Woolley will join him in June for a holiday, has made a big impact in the Football West Premier league, and with rumors of an A league contract is on the cards, he would like to play in Australia's top competition if a chance came his way, but at the moment he’s concentrating on performing well for the Lions.
“I’ve been to meet Dave Mitchell at the Glory a couple of times and there is quite a lot of interest from other A league clubs as well to be fair.
“I would be interested in playing in the A league but we will see what happens, I just want to enjoy my football here at the Lions for the time being and keep scoring goals.
“I’ve got some offers in line for July in Asia and back in Europe so I’ve just got to wait and see what happens,” explained Redshaw.
Redshaw’s football career has taken him around the world and has enjoyed ever minute. “It’s been great to see the world and play the game you love. I’ve played at Manchester United, Wrexham A.F.C, Manchester City, US Triestina Calcio in Italy serie B, LA Galaxy, and short time at Royal Antwerp in Belgium.
“I also had trials with Chelsea for quite a long time and was going to sign in Indonesia with Persiba Balikpapan FC with former West Ham and West Brom midfielder Peter Butler's as coach, but I couldn’t because of some silly rule,” said Redshaw.
He began his professional career at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ Old Trafford and enjoyed his time through their youth system. “It was great at United and I spent eight good years there. A couple of highlights from my time at the club are doing a Pepsi advert with David Beckham and Dwight Yorke and on the pitch winning the FA Premier under17s League, something I’ll never forget,” commented Redshaw.
He’s played on a number of talented players in his career and when asked who was the most difficult he had played on and the best player he had played against he was quick to answer. “At the Lions Andy Brown is the most difficult to get to buy a drink,” joked Redshaw.
“But back to the question, the best opponent who has marked me would have to be Marcel Desailly (Chelsea) or Jonathan Woodgate(Spurs) both great players and really tough opponents.
“Best player I ever played against is Gianfranco Zola, without doubt he is an absolute genius, I couldn’t believe a player could be that good,” explained Redshaw.

10.05.08 - Presidents Message
Hi to all football followers as we look forward to this weekends Football West Round 5 Premier league battle between traditional rivals and 2007 Premiers Floreat Athena and our Stirling Lions. We are in for some fantastic contests on Saturday with the Under 18's a 1st v 2nd match up, the reserves both fighting to climb the ladder and the Big Match sending the winner into the top four.
My committee and I would like to pay special welcome to Floreat president Peter Koulizos and his hard working committee, coaches, players and supporters and hope you enjoy the hospitality and football here at Macedonia Park. Peter is a tireless worker for the code of football here in WA and heads up as Chairman of the Semi Pro league Standing Committee. His efforts to unite and progress the game are well respected by all the presidents of the clubs and I commend him on a marvelous job he is doing on the games behalf.
On the park, it has been an interesting/exciting and frustrating fortnight that has just passed for our league squad. The 1-1 draw with Sorrento was a classic contest between two great footballing sides and most felt the sharing of a point was a fair result for both sides. New signing Mark Redshaw nipped in for the Lions solitary goal, while Stuart Montgomery showed why Sorrento will benefit from his signing this year. Last weeks trip to Dalmatinac Park saw Cockburn get out of jail with two late goals after it seemed our lads were going to hand out a right royal flogging after being two goals up with only 15 minutes played. Alan Muir was in fine form as was Steve Porter, Marc Anthony and goalscorer Phil Arnold until substituted with a knock to his leg. I am sure our boys will have learnt from this bitter experience, but it definitely was a case of three points squandered.
The Reserves got little reward for their efforts going down 2-0 at Cockburn after a big win against Sorrento in a last minute 2-1 victory. Doug Heskith and Joe Pugliese have the Under 18's playing some exciting and well disciplined football and have found themselves on top of the table and undefeated. Congratulations to all these young lads at this early stage of the season and all our supporters are hoping you can go all the way this year........keep up the great work lads!!
Last year the Floreat Athena side was unbeatable and became undefeated Champions drawing with us at home 2-2 and beating us 4-0 at Litis stadium with Jerry Karpeh in rare form. It is a new look side assembled this year for both sides, so today's tussle will again be a classic encounter with both teams giving their all.
This week the Perth Glory announced the appointment of Gareth Naven as the Glory Youth team Coach. We wish Gareth well as he searches to put together some of the state's most exciting future prospects to hopefully become senior Glory players. Trials commence this Sunday at Beale Park in Spearwood at 2pm and we wish all our players well in their hope's for selection.
I hope you all have a very pleasant day here at Macedonia Park today as we ROAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR OUR MIGHTY LIONS ONTO VICTORY!!!!!!!!!
Regards
Don

02.05.08 - Lions head to Cockburn for Cup final re-match
The Lions head to Dalmatinac Park on Saturday for a cup final re-match against Cockburn City in round four of the Football West Premier Division (3pm)
The Lions fresh from a hard fought point against Sorrento last week head to south in confident mood. Lions coach was happy wit hthe performance against the Gulls
“Sorrento is a very difficult team to beat and they put us under a great deal of pressure towards the end of the game. But I thought we played well first half and in the in the end I think both sides were happy with the point.
On Saturday’s game Lyons believes it will be a difficult game. “It’s a tough place to go and I remember a couple of years ago we got trashed six or seven nil. It’s a nice big ground with a great surface which will suit our game so were looking forward to the challenge,” said Lyons.
The injuries at Macedonia Park is getting better, with Dannie Richman and Ludovic Boi but in full training, although Kevin Henderson will still miss with a back Injury.
The return of midfielders Stephen Porter and Marc Anthony is a big boost for the club, while Mark Redshaw continues to find the back of the net, four goals in two games.
Cockburn City are fresh off a 3-0 victory away at Armadale on Sunday and will head into the game full of confidence. Coach Mirko Jelicic will be pleased with the form of striker Johnny Mirco, who has been outstanding for the Cockerels, along with defender Jason Godfrey. While Giovanni De Bartolo and Domenic De Felice, have both given the side the drive going forward.
It should be a great game so get along and support the Lions on Saturday, Doug’s under 18’s kick of at 11am, and Gary’s under 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions, under 15’s are admitted free.

Hesketh ready for a big season for the Lions
The start of season 2008 couldn’t have been anymore hectic for Stirling Lions defender Stephen Hesketh. First the 19-year-old received an invited to tour with A-Legue side Perth Glory to China in early march, for games against Changsha Ginde, Guangzhou and Changchun Yatai.
The youngster couldn’t have packed his bags quick enough and he enjoyed his trip, and most of all it has given him an insight into football at the next level. “The tour of China went really well for me; I played in two out of the three games, which was fantastic,” said Hesketh.
“Many people have asked me what my favourite moment on tour was but the whole experience of the tour was the highlight for me. To play against the Chinese Super League sides in front of big crowds was amazing and something I’ll never forget.
The Glory was defeated in all three games but Hesketh believed the sides were evenly matched in the games. “The standard over there was of a very high level and a fast pace. The teams we played against had been together for a long time, while we were a mix of Glory players and State League players and we competed very well in my opinion.
“All the State League lads played their part in the side and the comradeship of the players was brilliant and everyone on the tour got on well together,” added Hesketh.
Once back on home soil Hesketh was thrust into Premier League football in the Night Series with the Lions. The Young Lions reached the semi-Finals before losing to Floreat Athena 4-2, and Hesketh believes the club has the right mixture of youth and experience in 2008.
“We have excellent young players at Stirling and the Coaches, Michael Lyons and Paul Simmonds back them all the way.
“I got my chance as a 17-year-old and I have learnt heaps from them both and reserves Coach Gary Williams. Also our older players are very experienced and great role models on the pitch for us, we learn off them each week at training and it will only make us a better team in the future,” explained Hesketh.
The Lions have brought in new centre forward Mark Redshaw from the UK, and Hesketh believes he will do well at Macedonia Park. “Mark has settled in very well, he is another quality player with great experience and skill. He knows were the back of the net is, just like David Dugdale, so we hope he continues for the rest of the season. Also the return of Steve Porter and Marc Anthony will make the Lions stronger this season,” added Hesketh.
The Lions were held 1-1 at home last week against league leaders Sorrento but Hesketh believes the Lions held their own in a hard fought contest.
“It was a very tough game, like all games between the two sides. I thought we did well Sorrento are a good unit. On reflection 1 -1 was probably a fair score, the supporters seemed to enjoy the game,” said Hesketh.

All going to plan for former Lions midfielder
The growing number of stamps from Asian nations in Nick Ward's passport is an indication of how quickly the midfielder's life has changed. In the last few months, Ward has visited North Korea, Thailand and Japan while South Korea and China also feature in his imminent travel plans. Upon returning to the A-League last December the 23-year old midfielder helped spark his clubs late season surge and in more recent times has been a key figure in their inaugural Asian Champions League campaign.
Ward has enjoyed coming face-to-face with the regions best players and the challenges of playing against a variety of styles. "I've enjoyed playing in the AFC," he said. "It's a lot higher standard than the A-League especially when you come up against a Japanese team like Gamba Osaka - they've got lots of international players. You can tell the quality, especially in their front third. If you give them opportunities, they tend to take them."
Having addressed a groin injury which plagued the start to his days with Melbourne, Ward is excitedly looking forward to the up-coming Beijing Olympics. "Since coming back to Australia with Melbourne Victory I recovered from a hernia operation and things seem to be going a lot better," he explained. "I haven't missed any games with Melbourne Victory and it's really good for me to look forward to the Olympics in August."
The prospect of playing Serbia, the Ivory Coast and defending champions Argentina this August provides Ward the biggest challenge of his career to date. "You get only one chance to play in the Olympics - it's a great honour to represent your country," he said. "The draw is a very tough one. Serbia are always good at youth and national level. Ivory Coast will be tough (and) Drogba's shown interest that he wants to play in the Olympics. And the Argentinians speak for themselves." ward is hopeful selection and a strong showing in Beijing can springboard him into the senior Australian squad. "I've had a lot of experience with the younger teams and I've always been a starter with them," he said of his time with the national youth teams. "Obviously there are players ahead of me and I've got a lot to learn to come up to their standard. You've got Timmy Cahill, Mark Bresciano and those sorts of players ahead of you but all you've got to do is be given a chance and you never know."

25.04.08 - Lions host the Gulls in ‘Match of the round’
The Lions host Sorrento on Saturday at Macedonia Park (3pm), in Football West’s Match of the round.
Both sides are coming of victories the Lions stunning 5-2 win at Inglewood while the Gulls edged out Armadale 2-0 at Percy Doyle Reserve. The Gulls lead the league on maximum points and will head to the big game in confident mood having beaten the Lions four times on their last five visits. The one defeat came last season when Michael Lyons’ side won 4-0.
Lions coach Michael Lyons is looking forward to the big game. “We’ve worked well at training and the boys have looked sharp. It will be a tough game on Saturday as all games are against Sorrento, but the lads played well at Inglewood and we hope to carry the form we showed in the that game forward to Saturday.
“It’s great to have Steve Porter (right) back from the UK and Marc Anthony arrives back on Thursday and should be available for the game, so were slowly getting the squad back together” said Lions
New recruit Mark Redshaw stole the headlines last week with a hat trick on his debut, but the Lions had a number of contributors with Jordan Rhodes and Phil Arnold both in good form in the 5-2 win at Inglewood, and Lyons was pleased with the come back.
“We’ve been down many times and come back to win, which shows the lads have great character. In fact I turned to the bench when they scored their second goal and I said we’ll win this 5-2, and we did,” explained the former Everton defender.
New striker Redshaw was a star at the Clipsal Stadium and Lyons is happy with his start at Macedonia Park. “He’s a quite lad but showed on the pitch what he can do. He finished his goals well and to start at your new club with a hat trick is great. He looks comfortable in front of goal and places his shots more than whacking them in the net
Sorrento has recruited well this season and Steve Neville’s side is looking to repeat their league success in 2006. Its early day’s, but the Gulls with Neil Young in excellent form in goal and big Steve McDonald at the heart of the defence the Lions young guns will be in for a big test. New recruit Stuart Montgomery has continued his goal scoring and his partnership with Todd Harnwell will need to be watched closely by the Lions.
Get along and support the Lions, all the sides are in action on Saturday at Macedonia Park . Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s kick off at 11am, Gary Williams under 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions, under 15’s are admitted free.

Redshaw stars on Lions debut (Courtesy of www.footballwa.net)
Stirling Lions chances of ending 2008 with silverware received a major boost following the arrival of one-time England youth international Mark Redshaw. The dynamic 23-year old was offered a year-long deal with Stirling last week and immediately repaid their faith by bagging a memorable hat-trick in Saturday's 5-2 away win at Inglewood United.
With Stirling two-down, Redshaw brought his new club back into the game before half-time by twice out-muscling the home defence, while after the break his predatory instincts inside the penalty area enabled him to complete his haul and put Stirling well in control.
Praise came from on high for Redshaw following his best on ground display. "Some of the old boys were saying it was the best debut of any player to don the Macies strip since the clubs beginning," enthused Stirling president Don Evans.
"Mark may stand at just over five and a half feet but he's a giant in the finishing department. He beat the offside trap for his first, turned a couple of defenders inside out for his second and clinically blasted in his third from Andy Brown's cross ... a true master of his trade is Mark 'Lionheart' Redshaw."
Redshaw's professional approach to the game makes him a perfect role model for Stirlings youth brigade. "He goes about his work in such a professional and efficient manner and all the young boys at the club are in awe of his sharp skills and no-nonsense manner," added Evans.
Redshaw played six games and scored four goals for the England Under-17 team while playing youth team football at Manchester United, Wrexham and Manchester City. Time with English non-League sides Radcliffe Borough and Rossendale United preceded spells with U.S. Triestina (Italy) and L.A. Galaxy (United States).

18.04.08 - Lions look to bounce back
The lions will hope to bounce back from last weeks defeat against Western Knights when they travel to the Clipsal Stadium for the round two clash with Inglewood United (3pm)
The Lions will hopefully have defender Kevin Henderson and midfielder Marc Anthony available for Saturday’s game but Dannie Richman and Ludovic Boi will miss due to injury.
The Lion also give a debut to former Manchester City and Wrexham midfielder Mark Redshaw, and his partnership with Anthony and Muir will give the Lions strength in the middle of the park.
Inglewood has parted company with a number of senior players during the summer months and with seasoned campaigner Bobby Despotovski heading to Europe mid-season new coach Lee Bamber has gone back to the drawing board.
The contributions of goalkeeper Oliver Taseski along with Shane Pryce and Danny Kovacevic are going to be crucial to how their season pans out. Jason Colli, Michael Baczynski and Daniel Neiderberger will be their avenue to goal.
An active recruitment drive and the promotion of youngsters from within bring former Lions, Jamie Mitsopolous, James Sammutt and James Duncan into the squad for Saturday’s game.
Get along and support the Lions, all the sides are in action on Saturday at the Clipsal Stadium. Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s kick off at 11am, Gary Williams under 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions, under 15’s are admitted free.

Former Manchester United midfielder sign’s for the Lions
Former Manchester United attacking midfielder Mark Redshaw has signed for the Lions for season 2008, and will make his debut for the club tomorrow at Inglewood United.
The former United trialist has put pen to paper at the Macedonian Park club and will be a good signing for Michael Lyons side.
The 24-year-old also had trials at Chelsea and played for Welsh side Wrexham, Manchester City and in the American league with a spell at LA Galaxy.
Lions President is delighted to have secured the services of Redshaw for the season. “It’s a great boast for our club as we head into 2008. We have given the opportunity to the young members of our squad this season and if they continue to play well it will make Michael Lyons selection difficult,” said Evans.
“But to have some experience on the park is golden for the club and the youngsters. We hope to add a few more players during the next few weeks and with injuries, suspensions and player returning from overseas the Lions should be roaring again very soon,” commented Evans.
Redshaw also played in Belgium and for non league clubs Radcliffe Borough and Rossendale, before heading to Indonesia, and had trials with Persiba who are coached by former West Ham player Peter Butler. Welcome to Mace Park Mark.

11.04.08 - Lions host Knights in season opener
The Lions 2008 Football West Premier League campaign kicks off this Sunday when they entertain Western Knights at Macedonia Park (3pm)
Both side cruised into the second round of the Soccer Pools Cup last week, the Lions beating Gosnells City 5-0 and the Knights beat Perth Azzurri 7-0 at Nash Field courtesy of goals from Anthony Fearon (2), Rory Grant (2), Matt Allen, Keith Butler and Cormac Dawson.
Lions Coach Michael Lyons believes it will be tight game against a determined Western Knights side. “Any game against the Knights is a hard battle and we won’t be expecting anything less on Sunday,” said Lyons.
“Willie and Ronnie do a great job down their and I’ve told my players it will be a tough game.
“They’ve lost a few influential players, but have recruited some good players in turn so we know what we’ve got to do and we hope we can get the season off to a good start and secure three points,” explained Lyons.
In Lions team news, Kevin Henderson and Marc Anthony are still both unavailable but should return next week. Ludovic Boi (left) limped off against Gosnells and he will have a late fitness test to take his place in the team.
It’s Ronnie Campbell and Willie Kelly’s 11 th season at the Knights and they will hoping for a good start too. There is a familiar face in the Knights line up, former Lions midfielder Daniel Micevski, who is joined in the middle of the park by his brother and former Perth Glory midfielder David. New striker Rory Grant joins the club and has big shoes to fill, with Stuart Montgomery and John Thornley leaving Nash Field this season. Also youngsters Anthony Fearon and Anthony Skorich have both shown they can play at the top level and
At the back Cormac Dawson and Jonathon Mathers are joined by Scottish import Stuart Ferguson and the ever reliable Kevin Miller between the sticks.
Get along and support the Lions, all the sides are in action on Sunday Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s kick off at 11am, Gary Williams under 23’s at 1pm and the first team at 3pm. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions, under 15’s are admitted free.
The rest of the league starts on Saturday afternoon (3pm) with four fixtures; the highlight is the clash at the ECU University arena where E.C.U. Joondalup takes on Perth SC. Willie McNally’s side will fancy their chances at home but Perth, fresh from winning the night series go into the game as favourites.
Cockburn City coach Mirko Jeilcic, takes his side to Francis Street, on his return to WA football, to take on Swan IC. The Cockerels have a good record in the Swan Valley only losing once in the last eight visits, and this should continue this weekend.
The game between Fremantle Spirit and Sorrento has been switched to Percy Doyle Reserve as the Fremantle pitch isn’t ready for action, Steve Neville has recruited well in the summer and they should be too strong for the Spirit.
Brad Hassell’s first league game in charge at Armadale sees his side square off with Inglewood United at Alfred Skeet Oval. With both sides looking for a positive start to their new campaign it should be a tight encounter.
League Champions Floreat Athena faces a difficult start to their defensive of the title, under lights on Saturday evening (7pm), when they travel to Peelwood Parade to take on league newcomers Mandurah City. The home side are expecting a big crowd for their first ever Premier League game but Athena should come away with the points.

Lyons reflects on cup victory
The Lions continued there cup run with a comfortable 5-0 win against first division Gosnells City last week, but despite the victory Coach Michael Lyons was disappointed with certain aspects of the performance.
“Yes we won the game but when we went 2-0 up the game changed. We came a bit sloppy and we spent to long on the ball, and this was a major factor in the injury to Ludo,” explained Lyons.
But the Lions coach was happy in parts with the performance especially with the league season starting this week. “I would say though it was a good workout for the season ahead, Gosnells never gave in and the boys had to work hard, but we’re total in command and in game like that it’s difficult to get going,” said Lyons.
Gary Williams under 23’s also won easily on the weekend winning 8-0 and he was happy with the first up game from his young side. “I am thoroughly pleased with the performance by the players on Saturday afternoon. At this time of the year there are a number of players to choose from which makes it extremely disappointing for the lads who missed out,” said Williams.
Williams added: “In all fairness Gosnells gave a 100% effort but I believe our players overall fitness took over in the last 20 minutes. I was pleased for Jake Geddes who joined us this year; he started wide on the right but moved up front for the last 25 minutes and scored a hat trick.”
Their league campaign begins this weekend and Williams is looking forward to Sunday’s clash. He said: “Western Knights will be a tougher proposition this week but I am confident of getting three points which will hopefully put us on course for a good season.
Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s also won 7-1 and he was delighted with the performance. “We are very pleased with the balance in the squad; we controlled the game against a team that would not give up so well done lads," said Hesketh.
The game started in a massive down poor and made it difficult for both sides. Stirling started to get control and created a couple of half chances in the first 20 minutes. Gosnells were restricted to counter attack but to their credit kept playing out of trouble and not panic football.
Chris Zito notched two goals in the last half hour one a scramble the other a run onto a Cam Sutton through ball. Ndumba Makeche added a third before half time.
The second half saw more hammering rain but the Lions again managed to keep the better control and Zito got his hat-trick early on in the half. The Lions scored three more goals from Makeche, Sasey 2, and Divjakoski Clackston got one back for a gutsy Gosnells outfit.

05.04.08 - Lions outclass brave Gosnells City with a 5-0 lesson - by Don Evans
The Stirling Lions kicked off their Soccer Pools Cup defence on Saturday with an emphatic 5-0 win over a brave and battered Gosnells City side at Macedonia Park.
Torrential rain earlier in the day had no effect on the pitch as the game was played in perfect conditions. The highlight of the day for the Lions was league Cup debutant Rory Feely's (left) brace along with his strike partner Phil Arnold, giving the Lions it's youngest ever upfront pairing, Feely at 18 years of age and Arnold 19.
Stirling made their intentions clear from the start and in the opening minute Alan Muir sent a perfect through ball to Arnold who belted his shot inches wide of the mark from inside the box. A minute later a Jordan Rhodes corner was strongly met by Steve Hesketh’s head, with his header smashing into the cross bar and into the path of Leo Harman who smashed it over the bar.
A searching cross field ball by Muir to Rhodes was volley passed to Arnold who outpaced the City defence and smashed in the opening goal for the Lions in the 6th minute. Two minutes later it was 2-0 courtesy of a set piece corner take by Rhodes and neatly tucked in at the back post by Harman (right).
Gosnells City were under siege with the Lions midfielders led by Muir and ably assisted by Ludo Boi, Rhodes and Harman creating havoc from the centre of the park. Feely was very busy and menaced the Gosnells defenders at will while combining like a seasoned veteran with strike partner Arnold. Arnold was unlucky not to double his tally when a great run down the right by Feely saw his cut back cross belted at goal by Arnold but just going over the bar in the 22nd minute.
Feely was soon on the score sheet when another corner by Rhodes was headed at goal by Arnold but hitting the crossbar and falling kindly for Feely to tap in for his first league goal for the Lions in the 24th minute. The Lions attacked at will leading up to the half time break, but the Gosnells City defence held tight, with veteran keeper Jim Ellis called on to make save after save.
Lions keeper Phil Straker looked a lonely figure as the City side came out intent to minimize the damage with a defensive formation and only the lone striker as the second half starting line up.
Ellis was called on to be the hero as the Lions bombarded the goal with shots from Arnold and Feely being tipped over the bar or well saved by Ellis's heroic efforts. The Lions had seven consecutive corners with the City wall of defence keeping the ball out of the net.
The Lions coaching staff had reason for concern when star midfielder Ludo Boi was crunched in a tackle that saw the tough little midfielder limp off the park for physio assistance with Jordan Reid taking his place in the 56th minute.
The Lions broke down the brave City barrier with a defence splitting pass by Leo Harman into the path of Feely, who made no mistake with his clinical finish low and hard into the bottom right corner making it four for the Lions in the 60th minute.
It was Harman's pin point passing again that set up the fifth for the Lions, his 80th minute cross being neatly headed in by Arnold for the fifth and final goal to the dominant Lions side.
The Lions Reserves had a convincing 8-0 win as did the 18's with a 7-1 victory in a red letter day for the home side.
Next Week the Lions kick off the League season against traditional rivals Western Knights with the game held on Sunday 13th kick off at 5pm.

03.04.08 - Lions look for the treble in Soccer Pools Cup
The Lions host Tony Campbell’s first division side Gosnells City at Macedonia Park on Saturday (3pm) in the first round of the 2008 Soccer Pools Cup. Michael Lyons side will be looking for a treble in the competition after winning in 2006, against Swan IC, and 2007 against Cockburn City, both on penalties.
The Lions will be buoyed after a good performance in the Football West Shield draw with Floreat Athena on Wednesday evening, a game they should have won handsomely.
Lyons is looking to forward to the season ahead but he say’s they can’t look no further than Gosnells City on Saturday. “I’ve not seen Gosnells play, but it’s up to our lads to get the attitude right and we’ll take it from there. Obviously we must give them a great deal of respect as in any cup competition there will be upsets, and it’s no exception in our league,” said Lyons.
T he Lions welcomed back skipper Darko Ilomanoski and Michael Pugliese (left) against Athena, but were without Marc Anthony and Kevin Henderson, and both will missing on Saturday, but Lyons is hopeful the pair will back sooner rather than later. “Hendo had his operation last Thursday and it went well, he’s headed back to Scotland for some rest but he should be back soon, Marc is also back in Scotland but should return for next week’s league game against Western Knights,” explained Lyons.
Gosnells City struggled early in the night series but under new coach Campbell won impressively in their final two games, a 3-0 victory against Ashfield and a 4-2 win against South West Phoenix. Campbell knows his side will go in underdogs but believes they will be competitive. “The boy’s are looking forward to Saturday and we go there with confidence after a good pre-season. We’ve had a good week at training and we go there and nobody gives us a chance, but I’m sure we will give a good account of ourselves,” said Campbell.
In midfield for City Ian Maguire has had a great night series and has impressed Campbell, also striker Paul Harvey who has headed down under from Scotland this season has been the main threat for the side. At the Aaron Nadin has been solid along with Luke Woodard who recently signed from Premier League Cockburn City.
It’s a typical cup tie and will be great entertainment. Get along and support the Lions, all the sides are in action on Saturday Doug Hesketh’s under 18’s kick off at 11am, Gary Williams under 23’s at 12.45pm and the first team at 3pm. The 2008 Football West Premier League season goes into overdrive on Wednesday evening when the Lions take on Floreat Athena in the Football West Shield Challenge at the E&D Litis Stadium(7.30pm)

Lions in safe hands
It busy being a goalkeeper at times but if you add the position of club physio to that then it gets even busier. For Lions 20-year-old shot stopper Mark Bentley - (Right celebratng with his team mates after the 2007 Soccer Pools Cup Final victory) - that is the task he has undertaken so far this season but he’s enjoying every minute of it.
The under 23’s keeper played in this season night series victory against Inglewood United and after a shaky start, the young Lions came from 0-2 down to win 5-3. “I thought I did OK, and hopefully I proved to Mickey and Geordie that if needed in the season I’m ready to fill in,’ said Bentley.
He is enjoying working with current first team keeper Phil Straker who he has a great amount of respect for. “Phil is a great bloke, and I’ve managed to learn quite a bit from him. It’s great to play under a keeper with so much experience in the game and he brings the best out of me at training and I’m learning all he time,” explained Bentley.
Off the pitch Bentley has undertaken the role as club physio and he’s enjoying that side of his work, in fact that’s kept him busier than the keeper role at the club. ‘We’ve had a spate of injuries and that’s kept me really busy. It also helps in my work, as I’m a medical student at UWA in my fourth year, it is challenging for me but I’m assured by Don Evans I’ll have someone to help me with the physio role at the club soon,” commented Bentley.
“One player that’s kept me busy this season on the treatment table is Kevin Henderson; with a back complaint, also striker Andy Brown and Steven Hesketh, who has had a busy schedule with his Perth Glory commitments,” added Bentley.
The keeper has played for a number of clubs in WA after beginning his football in the UK. “I played a number of season’s in the UK as a junior, and joined Melville junior soccer club when I first arrived here at under 12’s and 13’s,” said Bentley.
“I went to play for Western Knights under 18’s when I was 14, then went to Fremantle City and had a short stint at Floreat Athena before joining the Lions, and I’ve been here for four seasons and I’m really enjoying it,” added Bentley.
Bentley was a member of the Western Australian under 16’s squad in 2003 that finished third in the Nationals in Sydney, a memory he holds dear in his football career. “It was an excellent experience for me to play with a great bunch of lads, and we thoroughly deserved the bronze medal.
“I also travelled to Singapore with the states under 18’s side in 2005 for a tournament over there, which again was a fantastic experience for me,” said Bentley.
A big supporter of the keeper for many a years has been his dad Michael, and Bentley say’s he’s been there for him every step of the way. “Yes dad has been great sitting through many a training session, as I was too young to drive there. If it wasn’t for his health he would probably still be warming me up before a game on a Saturday, and I’m really grateful for that,” explained Bentley.

21.03.08 - Lions look for Night Series final spot
The McInerney Ford Night Series has reached the semi-final stages, and there will be a football feast in a double header at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday night.
In the early game (6pm), the young Lions take on Michael Roki’s Floreat Athena. Lions coach Michael Lyons will have his side primed for a tough clash against last season’s league Champions.
Against Swan IC last week Marc Anthony and Steven Hesketh looked tired after their exploits with the Perth Glory in China but after a week on the track at the Lions Den they will be up for a big game against a talented Athena side.
Young defenders Dean Evans and Jordan Reid have impressed in the night series so far and will look to continue that this weekend. Along with Darko Ilomanoski (left) and the hopeful return of Kevin Henderson and Michael Pugliese from injury, they will have to work hard against a potent Athena forward line.
Another to impress last week was keeper Phil Straker, his penalty save gave the Lions the point to move into the semi-final’s. He’s making spot kick saves a speciality but his all-round game last week was excellent.
Athena went through Group B undefeated, and new striker David Foster helped himself to four goals in round four against Mandurah City, but their last game they draw 1-1 against Armadale.
They have a good side with the likes of Adam Bachiller, Branimir Mikulic, John Migas, Foster and Miki Vujacic who will be dangerous from set pieces. But the Lions will hope to show their fighting spirit and reach the final. Get along and support the Lions. Admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions and under 16's are admitted free.
In the late game (8pm) Graham Normanton’s Perth SC battle it out with Steve Neville’s Sorrento. Perth has moved into the semi-final undefeated from Group A, and their second half performance against ECU Joondalup last time out, coming from 0-1 down at the break to run out convincing 4-1 winners, sees them high on confidence.
Sorrento suffered a shock 1-2 loss against Fremantle Spirit in the last group game and will need to be at their best against a strong Perth side. The midfield battle will be worth the entrance fee alone, with Perth’s Robbie Puca and Antonio Naglieri up against the Gulls Shaun Kilkelly and Glen Thomas.

Evans stake’s his claim at the Lions Den
When a young Dean Evans ran out for his senior league debut, in the round 10 clash with ECU Joondalup last season, it was a huge step for the then 17-year-old. But he has improved with every game and has shown a great deal of maturity and ended 2007 with a winner’s medal has he helped the Lions defeat Cockburn City 4-3 on penalties in the Soccer Pools Cup final.
Evans (left with the 2007 Soccer pools Cup trophy) now embarks on a new season at Macedonia Park and first up is a McInerney Ford Night Series semi-final clash with league Champions Floreat Athena on Saturday night. The youngster believes the club has recruited well in the off-season and the club looks stronger. “Since returning to the training field we've had a few fresh faces in, the likes of Marc Anthony, Jordan Rhodes and Albert Osi Tutu, which I believe has been a massive gain for our club,” said Evans.
“We've worked tirelessly since the start of January and I think we have fully deserved a position in the semi finals of the night series. We haven't played our most consistent football over the series but if we are able to do that we are a very hard team to beat,” added the youngster.
The signing of Anthony has filled the void left when Keith Brown moved to Mandurah and Evans thinks the Scotsman is a great role modal on the pitch. “Marc has settled in terrifically at the Lions, he’s a class player and brings a lot of experience to our young side.
“On the ball I’d probably have to rate him as one of the best in the state, he gets along really well with younger lads in the side and encourages us to work hard at training. He is committed in doing his job at the Lions,” explained Evans.
Evans has played in a number of role at the club, but is just happy to play were the coaching staff tell him. “To be quite honest I’m not too fussed where the coach plays me. But if pushed I would much rather play in the midfield doing the holding role. I find that I get on the ball more and I have a responsibility to keep the team together. I've played right back quite a bit throughout the night series and also centre back one game which I also enjoyed,” added Evans.
The club have been nicknamed ‘The young lions’ with so many teenagers pushing for a first team start, but Evans believes the Coaching staff have the right blend of experience and youth in the side at present. “The mix at the club is great; the more experienced lads like Kevin Henderson and Darko Ilomanoski are always encouraging us and helping us which are a great benefit for all the young lads.
“Under Mickey and Geordie it’s been great to have them both as coaches as they both strive to get the best out of all of us. Mickey works with more of the younger lads every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning so that we can improve our game. The best thing that we share at our club is that we all have a close bond on and off the field and on the football pitch we work for each other, which I think has helped us achieve what we have over the past few years,” commented Evans
The 18-year-old, whose ambition is to become a professional player, was offered a trial at the AIS in Canberra recently and enjoyed every minute. He said: “It was definitely a great experience to trial at the AIS, the facilities and the training that you encounter is what you dream of.
“I didn’t make it but they mentioned they will be monitoring my progress throughout the year; I still valued the experience to trial there. I got to see a few of the WA boys that are living there, Howard Fondyke and Mark Birighitti, they showed me around and I think they are enjoying there time there.
It was a hectic schedule at the AIS, and Evans explained a typical day on campus. “On a day to day basis, we would wake up about 7:30 for breakfast as our first session was at 10:00. The first session would usually be more technical like possession and keeping the ball central and in the tight.
After each session we'd go straight to the plunge pool (ice bath) and spa for recovery. Lunch would be at around 12 30 so we just got set for that. Our next session would be at 4:30 so we had quite a bit of time to put our legs up and relax. The afternoon session would usually be mixed with the current AIS scholarship players and we also played a match against them as well. Dinner would be 6:30 - 7:00 and then free time from then on,” explained Evans.
One member of the club who would be pleased to see Dean’s progress on the pitch is his father Don. The hard working Lions President work’s tirelessly on behalf of the club and Dean is grateful for his encouragement. “Dad loves football and he does work very hard for the club. He spends more time there than at home,” joked Evans.
“But it’s in his blood and he really wants the younger lads at the club to succeed to there highest potential and will give them every opportunity. Dad is proud that I am playing first team football but I just have to keep working to get better and training hard is the only way that will happen,” added Evans. |
14.03.08 - Lions need a victory against Swan IC
A victory against, former Stirling Macedonia striker Paul Lincoln’s Swan IC side on Sunday at Dorrien Gardens (8pm) will give the Lions a spot in the semi-finals.
The Lions welcome back players and head Coach Michael Lyons this week; Lyons was in Margaret River last weekend and missed the come from behind victory against Inglewood United. Also the return of Marc Anthony and Steven Hesketh (left), the pair was away with the Perth Glory in China and keeper Phil Straker; all should be available for selection.
A huge blow for the club is the loss of Phil Arnold with a broken toe; the talented youngster will be out for a number of weeks. The Lions showed great character last week to come back from 2-0 down to eventually win 5-3, the performances of youngsters Jordan Reid, Dean Evans and Ludovic Boi were stand outs along with veteran Leo Harman (right) and Jordan Rhodes.
The Swans are coming off a good 2-2 draw with league leaders Perth SC last week, youngster Alex Cocking was again on target along with big defender Paul Baczynski. New Coach Lincoln has given the boys from the Swan Valley a little more steel this season so far and the Lion’s will be in for hard game.
David Perich has been tremendous in midfield so far in the night series as too Aaron Cole at the back, but they have doubts over Damian Scali and Robert Monterosso who both limped off last week. Get along and support the Lions admission is $7 adults, $4 concessions and under 16's are admitted free.
In the rest of the weekend games, first in Friday’s early game (6.30pm), the bottom two teams do battle when Inglewood United meet Western Knights. While the late game between Perth SC and ECU Joondalup (8.30pm) it’s a must win game for both sides. Perth is coming of a surprise 2-2 draw against Swan IC last week while ECU Joondalup easily beat the Knights 4-1. The battle in the middle of the park is were the game will be won, with Antonio Naglieri and Andrija Jukic taking on Scott Bushby and Scott Bulloch.
On Saturday group A leaders Floreat Athena takes on Brad Hassall’s Armadale (6pm) at the E&D Litis stadium. New recruit David Foster made a huge impact last week with all four goals against Mandurah City and Coach Michael Roki will look for more of the same against the Reds. In the late game (8pm) Mandurah City go in search of their first point in the tournament, but will find it hard against Cockburn City.
In Sunday’s other games Steve Neville’s Sorrento takes on Fremantle Spirit (6pm) The Gulls have already qualified for the semi-final and should take the points against the port side. Don't forget to pick up a copy of official Football West programme, 'The Match', upon entry for just $2. |
Lions coach happy with the performance despite poor start.
The Lions were 0-2 down after only fifteen minutes against Inglewood United on Saturday evening and the look on assistant coach Paul ‘Geordie’ Simmons was perplexing. With head Coach Michael Lyons away in Margaret River, Simmons and under 23’s coach Gary Williams took the side in his absence and it didn’t look good.
Not only were they 0-2 down they had also lost talented youngster Phil Arnold to a broken toe, but the former WA state coach switched things around and his delight was there for all to see when the Lions ran out victors 5-3.
He was happy with the performance despite the poor start, “We had a few injury scares going into the game and we knew basically how Inglewood would line up and the formation they would adopt,” said Simmons.
“Our game plan was to try and bring their defence up high and get balls behind them for Phil Arnold and Leo Harman. We didn’t really get the chance as Phil had to be replaced after about 10 minutes with what appears to be a broken big toe.
“We then fell asleep and our defence took up a line that was far too deep and stood off the Inglewood attackers. This drew our midfield onto our defence and allowed Inglewood to pick up the ball in the middle,” added Simmons.
“We switched Michael Pugliese into right back and brought Dean Evans into his preferred position also swapped Jordan Rhodes to his favoured right side from the left. This had an almost immediate impact with Rhodes scoring twice and getting us back into it,” he continued.
“Then second half saw us in my opinion dominate Inglewood and further goals from Boi, Harman and an own goal gave us in the end a well deserved win,” added Simmons.
The young Lions team played well and Jordan Reid was solid at left back, in only his second first team appearance. “Jordan was superb, except for some poor distribution with his left foot,” said Simmons.
“But his tackling was the hardest I’ve seen for a long time I’m sure some of the Inglewood players would vouch for that,” joked Simmons
There were also good contributions from veterans Leo Harman and Jordan Rhodes and Simmons believes the pair will give the young Lions side a great deal of experience during the season.
“I had Leo in my side at Joondalup as a young lad, and he was an out and out striker and this position has been limited for him at The Den. But on the night we played him up front and I thought he was our man of the match.
“His running, chasing and back to goal play was exceptional. He took his goal very well indeed and probably on his performance should have been rewarded with a few more,” said Simmons.
“Jordan Rhodes has been struggling to get to training due to working up north and he has struggled for fitness in the last few games. In this one he was ineffective on the left but when he swapped to the right it gave us a greater balance and with him liking to push on created other opportunities for us, as can be seen by his two goals. Overall he had a very good game and did a lot of the donkey work for the side,” commented Simmons.
The Lions face Swan IC in Sunday’s late game and a victory will guarantee the Macedonia Park club a semi-final birth next week. |
07.03.08 - Lions ready to roll the Wood - Stirling Lions v Inglewood United preview
The fourth round of the McInerney Ford Night Series sees Michael Lyons Stirling Lions taking on Lee Bamber’s Inglewood United on Saturday evening at Dorrien Gardens (6pm)
Both sides are still in contention for a semi-final spot and have it all to play for, and a victory is a must for both sides. The Lions won 3-2 against Western Knights last week with youngster Phil Arnold’s late strike the difference, while Inglewood pushed group B leaders Perth SC all the way before losing 1-0.
The Lions will again be without Marc Anthony and Steven Hesketh for the game, the pair are touring China with the Perth Glory.
Both sides possess some talented youngsters, with AIS trialist Dean Evans, Ludovic Boi (left) and Arnold for the Lions while for the Wood Michael Baczynski, Matthew Wardle and James Sammut adds youth to their staring line up.
But the match-up of the night will be the experienced pair of Inglewood’s Bobby Despotovski and the Lions Kevin Henderson (right), both have been in the game for a number of years, and will both be looking forward to a tough clash.
Both keepers have also performed well in the night series and this game will be no except. For the Lions Phil Straker has been outstanding, likewise Oliver Tseski for Inglewood, and the pair will both need to be at their best if their respective teams are to take out the vital victory, and head closer to a semi-final berth.
The last time the two sides met was in the semi-final of the 2007 Soccer Pools Cup, where the Lions came from behind for victory. Michael Baczynski, from the spot had given Inglewood the lead but Matt Italiano and a late Andy Brown goal gave the Lions the victory.

Lions pair shine for Glory in China
Stirling Lions pair Marc Anthony and Steven Hesketh are in the Perth Glory squad who are touring China and both have played there parts in the two games so far. Anthony has been a stand out in both games and young Hesketh played for 75 minute against Super League side Changsha Ginde. Former Lions midfielder Keith Brown, who is now at Mandurah City also played in the games.
E.C.U. Joondalup goalkeeper Tommi Tomich and team mate Mark Lee, Josip Magdic of Floreat Athena have also made the trip. Exciting youngsters Andrija Jukic (Perth S.C.) and Callum Roberts (Fremantle Spirit) and Mandurah City defender Keith Brown complete the local contingent
In match one the Glory went down 3-0, to Chinese Super League champions Changchun Yatai Stan Lazaridis put in a solid display in what was his first competitive hit out since January. The performances of Anthony and Perth SC’s Andrija Jukic also caught the eye of coaching staff along with Brown, who lined-up in the centre of defence alongside Jamie Coyne.
The second game ended in a 2-0 loss but Coach David Mitchell applauded the effort shown by his new-look squad. “The boys have been very positive in the way they’ve approached every match and the more time we spend together on the pitch the more cohesive our play has been,” said the Glory boss. “It has been really pleasing to see the lads on trial out there giving everything to prove they’re ready to make the step-up into the A-League.”
In the Glory report on its official web site it said Anthony was once again a calming influence in central midfield while at the back Keith Brown put in another solid 90 minute contribution.
Well done to Marc and Steven best of luck |
29.02.07 - Lions look to checkmate the Knights
Western Knights will look for some much needed pride in the Night Series when they take on Michael Lyon’s Stirling Lions in Sunday night’s early game at Dorrien Gardens (6pm)
The Lions are coming off a hard fought loss against Perth SC and need a victory to get them back on track. Lyons has a full squad to choose from and will be looking for the squad to continue their good pre-season form. They fought back magnificently, against a good Perth side and deserved something from the game, but a strange penalty decision gave the home side the points.
Marc Anthony was outstanding in last week’s defeat and he will be given support by Jordan Rhodes (left), Alan Muir and youngster Michael Pugliese in midfield.
In defence the vast experience of skipper Darko Ilomanovski and Kevin Henderson will be much needed against the Knights along with youngsters Dean Evans and Steven Hesketh (right), who have both impressed so far this season.
The Knights have lost both games in the competition and are coming off a disappointed 0-4 loss against Swan IC. They will be without keeper Kevin Miller and striker Rory Grant after both were sent off against the Swans.
Ronnie Campbell, who has been without a number of first team players in the pre-season competition, will hope to have Luka Jukic back to bolster the midfield where he will be joined by former Perth Glory midfielder David Micevski and his brother Daniel. In attack youngster Anthony Skorich has been a shining light for the Nash Field side and he will hope to continue this against the young Lions side.
The last time the sides met was in round 18 last season, when Andy Brown scored the only goal in the Lions 1-0 victory at Nash Field. |
21.02.08 - Perth next up for Lions
The Lions take on last season’s McInerney Ford Night Series winners Perth SC in round two at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday evening (8pm).
Both sides won in round one, Perth beating the Western Knights 6-3 while the Lions edged out ECU Joondalup 1-0. The Lions beat Perth in the group stage last season when a Leo Harman goal gave them a 2-1 win at the Litis Stadium, and Coach Michael Lyons will hope for a repeat on Saturday.
Youngsters Phil Arnold, Ludovic Boi (left), Steven Hesketh and Danny Richmond were outstanding and were the catalysts against ECU, Richmond scoring the winner on the night. But it was Lions keeper Phil Straker, the 2007 Football West Kelme Goalkeeper of the Year, who denied ECU a point with a stunning save from Stuart Montgomery.
It was Andreas Oliveira hat-trick that inspired Perth to victory against the Knights and Coach Graham Normanton will hope for more against the Lions. The return of strike partner David Onoforo was a big plus for Perth last week and they will hope to have a number of players available after missing last weeks victory. In midfield Robbie Puca and Todd Howarth were outstanding and Greg Sharland also impressed on his debut.
The last time the sides met was in the Quarter –finals of last season’s Soccer Pools cup with the Lions winning 3-2 at Dorrien Gardens. |
25.01.08 – Rhodes thrilled to be back at Lions – (Courtesy of www,footballwa.net)
‘Pleased as punch’ pretty much sums up how Jordan Rhodes is feeling about returning to Stirling Lions. Fresh from playing his part in Mandurah City’s triumphant First Division campaign, Rhodes says he’s looking forward to resuming his Premier League career at Stirling.
“It’s a terrific club to be at and I’m excited about being back,” said Rhodes, who was a key member of the Lions Cup winning squad of 2006. “I can’t speak highly enough of the atmosphere at the club - from the president down through the coaches and players, everybody is friendly, wants to work for each other and wants to bring success to Stirling.”
Rhodes spent last winter at Mandurah where he was a vital ingredient in Stuart Curries’ side that swept their way to the First Division title, and into the top flight. “It’s difficult to leave the lads at Mandurah after the season we had. I would liked to have stayed on for their first year in the Premier League but I’m living in Perth and my work commitments don’t allow me time to commute to and from Mandurah,” said the livewire 20-year old. “I’ve never played against Mandurah before so it will be an unusual experience for me when that fixture comes around this season.”
Other than a couple of changes to the playing roster, Rhodes says the squad is much the same as when he was there two years ago. “The squad hasn’t changed considerably since 2006, which is a credit to the club as the players are staying for long periods and not wanting moving on,” he commented. “Keith Brown and Dave Dugdale are our two key losses from last season, but Marc Anthony and Albert Osei-Tutu have been down for the pre-season and looked sharp. Marc adds a bit more creative drive in the midfield as well as plenty of experience, whilst Albert gives us a different type of option up front.”
Pre-season training commenced a couple of weeks ago for those at Stirling and will slowly build to their opening Night Series game against ECU Joondalup in mid-February. “We started in early January and are currently training three times a week. There’s a lot of fitness work involved at this time of the year but the majority of it has been with the football. We’ve got a few friendlies lined up for early next month and after those we go into the pre-season competition.
It’s a pleasure to work under Mike Lyons, his honesty and enthusiasm commands respect and as a result you don’t want to let him down.” Lyons, former captain of Everton, has assembled a balanced squad for the new season which Rhodes feels is capable of ending the season with silverware. “Mike has got the right mix of experience and youth at the club this season,” said Rhodes.
“There are too many to name individually, but the younger players now all have a years more experience under their belts and I believe we will see great things from them this season. Mike hasn’t spoken to the lads about goals for the season but knowing him he’ll expect 100% from all the players and if he gets that we should be able to bring a trophy or two Macedonia Park.” |
Preston tempt Lions midfielder to Melbourne (Courtesy of www,footballwa.net)
Following a year battling injury at the Lions Daniel Micevski has decided to wipe the slate clean by moving to Melbourne. The skilful 22-year old midfielder heads east shortly to commence a one-year contract with Victoria Premier League champion Preston Lions.
"I'm really looking forward developing further as a footballer in Melbourne," Micevski said. "My priority will be to cement my spot in the first eleven, if I can be playing well and playing consistently then I'll be happy."
It's been twelve months since Preston first tried to lure Micevski east. "I was invited to join Preston last season after one of their officials saw me in the Night Series. But I wanted to play out the season with Stirling Lions and complete my studies," said Micevski, who gratefully accepted the clubs offer of a trial last month.
"I went to Melbourne a couple of weeks before Christmas. The coach, Goran Lozanovski, was very welcoming and made it clear that he wanted me at the club for the coming season." Micevski came up through the ranks at Perth S.C. but it was only after joining Bayswater City in 2006 that he emerged as a player of great distinction.
His upward rise was expected to continue last season with Stirling but that was brought to a shuddering halt by injury. "Things started on a high but very quickly fell away," he explained. "We were unbeaten and in the last four of the Night Series when I tore ligaments in my knee. I was out for half the season and to be completely honest never got back to being 100%."
To make sure he was in peak form for trials at Preston Micevski turned to Ronnie Campbell and Willie Kelly at Western Knights. "I played for Ronnie and Willie in the Australian-Croatian Tournament at the end of last year and stayed on for the pre-season this year," he said. "Initially I did a lot of strengthening work to make sure my knee was 100% and then slowly built up my fitness. Ronnie and Willie were fantastic and it was a tough decision not to stay with them this year - I wish the boys at the club all the best for this season."
From every one at the Lions Daniel all the best for the future!!! |
18.01.08 - Anthony heads into the Lions Den
After a superb opening season in the Football West Premier League Marc Anthony showed why he was touted as an A-League player by a number of Coaches and pundits in the game. He performed well for ECU Joondalup and was selected in the www.footballwa.net team of the year and also won the ‘Let’s Talk Football’ player of the Year.
The Talented Scotsman has decided to move on from ECU Joondalup and has signed for Stirling Lions for season 2008. Themidfielder refected on his first season in Perth.
He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my first season; it was a little bit strange when I first arrived from Scotland especially with the weather.
“My first couple of games the temperature was 26 degrees, which obviously we don’t get that back home.
“The league is a good standard and they play the game in a good manner, and most of the teams try and play football, which suits my game so I really enjoyed it.”
Anthony enjoyed his time at the northern suburbs club and was grateful for the opportunity to play for them. “I loved it at ECU, when I first arrived from Scotland I went straight up the club, and right away you sort of get a feel for the place.
“When I first went I had Willie McNally as manager, Gerry McEwan as his assistant, and Syd Amphlett and John Higgins, and they all made me feel really welcome, and basically when they asked me to sign I had no hesitation of signing, and all season they were great for me,” added Anthony.
A number of clubs were interested in signed the former Glasgow Celtic striker and he believes he has made the right decision. “I spoke to a few clubs regarding this season, Perth SC, Stirling Lions and of course ECU, and It looks like I’ll be heading to Macedonia Park for the season ahead and I’m really looking forward to it. They have a good set up and they have been great to deal with,” commented Anthony.
He’s also looking forward to working with Lions Coach Michael Lyons. “Mickey has a lot of respect in the game and the amount of times he’s played for Everton. He’s also a good Coach, he’s great with the young kids, and that’s one thing I noticed last year, he’s not afraid to play the young kids.
“One thing I spoke to Mickey about, ahead of next season and before I signed their, was that he wanted me to improve the side, but he wants me to bring on the young players, and that’s what I’m hoping to do next season.”
The former Glasgow Celtic trainee (left- Anthony playing for Celtic) spent five years at the Scottish giants, but only made one appearance for the first team; it came at Kilmarnock on August 24th 1996 a game the Hoops won 3-1.
He was loaned by Celtic to Tranmere Rovers in England and to Clydebank in Scotland, before leaving Celtic Park in 1999, when he signed for Berwick Rangers. He played 82 league games at the club before moving to Forfar Athletic in 2002.
His pace and skill has been noticed by the Glory and the 29-year-old would like to make the next step to play in the A-League but at the moment he’s just concentrating on the Lions.
“Obviously it would be great to play for the Glory, to go back to full time training and play in the best league in Australia. I’ve been down there a few times just to help in practise matches and I really enjoyed it.
“I’ve not spoken to David Mitchell in great lengths, but he has said he will be keeping an eye on me. He said it’s up to me to get my head down at the Lions, and get fit and he will have a look at me in the Night series.
“I would imagine the Glory will be looking at a few of the games, as there is talk of them signing a few state league players. So if I make an impact in the Night Series there may be an opportunity,” said Anthony.
Lions President Don Evans is delighted to get Anthony to the club. “We’re all delighted to have secured Marc’s services for next season. He will not only add a great deal of experience to our side, but he will influence the younger players at the club and improve their game too,” said Evans. |
Former Lion to stay in Australia
Former Stirling Lions midfielder Nick Ward is considering scrapping a planned return to Europe in favour of remaining in the A-League. The Olyroos midfielder played a starring role, and scored his first goal since returning to Australia, as Melbourne Victory defeated Wellington Phoenix 3-0 last week. “It’s a really good feeling. It’s been a while,” Ward said of his goal which put Victory two-up late in the first half. “I think the last goal I scored was for the Olyroos, maybe three or four months ago … it is just really nice to be playing again.”
Ward, who won the 2004 Gold medal as the Soccer West Coast’s Player of the year in his final season at the Lions, has been impressed with the set-up in Melbourne since accepting a six-month deal little over a month ago. “It’s definitely different playing with Melbourne. It is a lot more professional than when I was at Perth. We didn’t have the facilities, the backing or the crowds and the players as well,” said Ward, who played 25 games for Perth Glory. “It’s easy when you’ve got good players, like Carlos (Hernandez) and Archie (Thompson) … with those sorts of players, it’s easy to adapt.”
After a disappointing 18-month stint with London club Queens Park Rangers, 22-year-old Ward planned to use his time back in Australia as a springboard to another European deal. But he admits he’s now re-considering where he plays his football. “I haven’t written that off at all,” Ward said of staying with Melbourne. “The biggest thing for me is to get back to my full fitness and I’m playing regularly now. I’m enjoying my football again. I had a tough time overseas and I just want to get back to loving football.” |
11.01.08 - Lions Den Open for Business and Ready to Roar in 2008
The Lions den has been buzzing with talk of new signings and bigger and better facilities for all it’s players and supporters in the year ahead. The win by the federal Labor government gives new hope to a facility that is in need of an upgrade after 21 years of solid service to the WA football community. Government officials have contacted club president Don Evans and confirmed the allocation of a $1 million dollar grant to help lift the facility into the new millennium with playing fields and hall improvements the focus. ‘We are delighted to receive this fantastic support after years and years of hard volunteer toil by members of the Macedonian community and now see the recognition as the club blends into the broader community and serves the people within the Stirling community for all their football development needs” Evans said.
On the field the Lions have welcomed new signings Mark Anthony and Jordan Rhodes. “Mark is a top quality inclusion to our squad and will partner up well with Stevie Porter and young cubs Ludo Boi, Dannie Richman and Phil Arnold. Add Jordie Rhodes to the mix and we will have another potent midfield mix for the year ahead, We will miss Keith Brown, who has moved onto Mandurah and we wish him well there after two very successful seasons at the Lions Den. Keith has matured as a player and served our club well in his return to WA.”
